Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream a local playlist to YouTube Live using OBS, add the files to OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, set the order and loop behavior, then connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its server URL and stream key. Test the preview and stream health before the broadcast. This method is for media files on your computer—not a YouTube-hosted playlist URL.
Before you start
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s general guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streamers. Complete activation well before your event. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
- OBS Studio and VLC: Install both. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media sources guide.
- Local media files: Have the videos ready on the computer running OBS and confirm you have the necessary rights to stream them.
- A stable upload connection: Your upload capacity needs to exceed the combined streaming bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and a reliable connection. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers preparation and monitoring.
If your channel has not streamed live before, do not wait until broadcast day to enable the feature; activation may take up to 24 hours. The age and eligibility rules above are YouTube’s general guidance, so check the current help page for your account and location.
Add and configure the playlist in OBS
- Open or create a scene. In OBS Studio, select the scene you want to use or create one for this broadcast.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video, and create or select the source. If VLC Video is absent, check that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches your OBS installation.
- Add the media files in playback order. Open the source’s properties and add the local files in the sequence you want them to play. This source is documented for playlists; a YouTube-hosted playlist URL is not the same as a list of local media files.
- Choose loop and shuffle behavior. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final item. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; shuffle is a separate control and is off by default in OBS’s guide.
- Check source visibility and audio. Make sure the VLC Video source is visible in the scene you intend to broadcast. Confirm that its audio reaches the OBS stream mix, and add overlays or still images as separate scene elements if needed.
- Preview the sequence. Play representative sections and confirm that video, transitions between files, and audio behave as expected.
For one video rather than a playlist, OBS’s standard Media Source supports an individual file and a loop option. For several files in order—or a shuffled list—use VLC Video, which provides separate playlist, loop, and shuffle controls. OBS documents both source types.
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event
- Create or manage the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream for your broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes the event workflow.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. In OBS’s streaming settings, enter the server URL and stream key shown for that YouTube event. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Choose a supported connection and encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Its general encoder guidance calls for H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your computer and upload connection can sustain; higher settings are not automatically more reliable. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Start the encoder, then inspect YouTube’s preview. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Begin the YouTube event only after checking that the correct scene, image, and audio are reaching the preview.
- End both sides cleanly. End the live event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an event longer than that will be archived. YouTube’s encoder guide includes this archive guidance.
YouTube’s stated general settings are encoder guidance, not a guarantee that every file, computer, or connection can sustain a particular resolution or frame rate. Match the output to the capability of your setup and verify it in a test.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up a test and keep the stream healthy
- Test representative content. Use clips with the motion and audio levels expected in the full playlist; a still or silent test may not reveal problems that appear in the actual files.
- Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total streaming bitrate. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to connect a compatible computer and router, but it cannot compensate for inadequate internet service.
- Watch preview and stream health. Confirm that the expected picture and sound appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Monitor during the broadcast for interruptions, missing audio, or unexpected source changes.
- Start early. YouTube advises setting up encoder streams well ahead of time and starting the encoder before the scheduled event. This gives you time to catch configuration or connection problems.
Copyright and India-specific considerations
Only stream videos and music you have the necessary rights to use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you believe you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent an interruption. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider represents that it has the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content and must follow applicable laws and licensing, registration, or notification requirements in the stream territory. That does not amount to a complete legal checklist for India: obligations can depend on the content and its use. A technical setup guide cannot determine whether a particular Indian music, broadcast, or other licence is sufficient. Review your rights and applicable requirements for the specific material you plan to stream. See the YouTube Terms of Service.

When YouTube ingestion alternatives matter
For a normal local OBS playlist, you do not need HLS: OBS can send the playlist through the standard encoder workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. HLS is an alternative for supported workflows and codecs, but YouTube says it has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion. Its HLS guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those HLS requirements are not settings you need to apply to a standard local VLC Video playlist. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide and YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
Troubleshooting common playlist problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source list | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and check the Sources menu. |
| The playlist stops after the final file | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Files play in an unexpected order | The source list order or shuffle setting differs from what you intended. | Review the file order in the source properties and turn off Shuffle Playlist for fixed order. |
| The preview has video but no sound | The playlist audio may not be reaching the OBS stream mix. | Check the source’s audio activity and routing in OBS, then confirm audio in the YouTube preview during a test. |
| YouTube does not show the incoming stream | The event’s server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the encoder has not started. | Compare OBS’s streaming settings with the current event details in YouTube Studio, then start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room. |
| Video or audio becomes unstable | The computer or upload connection may not sustain the chosen output settings. | Check YouTube stream health, confirm upload headroom, and choose settings your encoder and connection can sustain. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after a content match | YouTube detected third-party material; a licence alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption. | Check the live-stream copyright guidance and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable. |
