You can loop a pre-recorded video on YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by preparing the media, creating a YouTube broadcast, sending it with an encoder such as FFmpeg, and supervising the encoder so it can recover from failure. The headline VPS price is only part of the cost: a continuous stream can use substantial outbound data, and the server must sustain the encoding workload. Treat inexpensive plans as candidates to test, not proven 24/7 streaming recommendations.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A pre-recorded video or playlist that you have the right to stream, stored on the VPS or accessible to it.
- A Linux VPS with enough sustained CPU, memory, storage, and outbound transfer for your chosen stream settings.
- An encoder, such as software running on the VPS, plus a process or service supervisor and a way to inspect logs.
- A stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
This setup sends an encoded feed from the VPS to YouTube. YouTube distributes the live stream to viewers; the VPS is not the viewer-facing video delivery network.
Choose a VPS for the workload, not just the advertised price
Compare the actual plan and recurring terms before ordering. India location may be convenient, but the available evidence does not establish that Mumbai or Bangalore is required for YouTube ingest or that an India server improves delivery to viewers. Do not assume region alone determines stream quality.
- CPU: Software transcoding can demand sustained compute. Replaying already encoded media without changing its format may use less CPU, but the difference depends on the file and encoder; test your exact workload.
- RAM and disk: Leave room for the operating system, encoder, media, logs, updates, and any local backup. Do not infer suitability from a small plan’s vCPU count alone.
- Transfer and overages: Check monthly outbound allowance, how traffic is counted, excess charges or throttling, and whether traffic limits are shared across IP versions or instances.
- All-in recurring cost: Check renewal rather than introductory price, taxes, IPv4 charges, backups, snapshots, and billing minimums.
- Operations: Console access, reboot behavior, monitoring, snapshots, and support can matter when you need to recover a stream.
One published Mumbai plan example
AWS Lightsail’s pricing page lists a Mumbai Linux/Unix plan at $3.50 USD per month with 512 MB memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. AWS also states that Mumbai bundles include half the transfer allowance in its general bundle table, and that outbound traffic beyond a plan allowance is subject to overage charges. This is a price-page snapshot, not a tested 24/7 video workload or a recommendation; confirm the selectable plan, transfer terms, IP option, tax, and billing details at checkout. Estimate the bandwidth bill before committing
For a steady stream bitrate of B Mbps, estimate about B × 0.45 GB per hour in decimal gigabytes, before audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other server traffic. This is unit-conversion arithmetic: megabits per second × 3,600 seconds, divided by eight bits per byte and 1,000 megabytes per gigabyte.
| Video bitrate | Approximate transfer per hour | Approximate transfer over 30 continuous days |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Mbps | 1.8 GB | About 1.3 TB |
| 10 Mbps | 4.5 GB | About 3.24 TB |
These estimates exclude overhead, so plan for more than the arithmetic minimum. A VPS with a 1 TB allowance, for example, would not cover a full 30 days at a steady 4 Mbps under this estimate. Confirm whether the provider measures outbound transfer and how it applies allowances and overages. No performance test of the example plan under continuous streaming is established here.

Prepare the loop media
- Choose the video or playlist and make sure you have the necessary rights to broadcast every audio and video element.
- Upload the media to the VPS, retain a local backup, and verify that the file plays through to its end.
- Check that the selected encoder can read its actual video and audio codecs. The YouTube sources below do not prescribe a specific format for this loop workflow, so validate the file with your encoder rather than assuming compatibility.
- Decide whether you will stream one file repeatedly or manage a playlist. Confirm the intended sequence and transitions before exposing it to viewers.
Enable YouTube Live and create a broadcast
- If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming early; YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast and stream configuration you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it, place it in a public script, or show it in screenshots.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS endpoint where available. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP in its live encoder settings guidance.
Set encoder settings YouTube can accept
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match the output to a stable upload connection and the resolution and frame rate you can sustain continuously.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are values listed in YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them. Start with a setting your server can sustain, then test the complete route—including the actual media’s audio and motion—and watch stream health in the Live Control Room. Higher bitrate also raises transfer use, so choose quality with the bandwidth estimate in mind.

Start the encoder under supervision
Run the encoder as a managed service or under a process supervisor configured to restart it after failure, retain logs, and permit a clear stop. Keep the stream URL and key in a protected configuration mechanism rather than a public example or shared log. Before relying on unattended operation, deliberately test the restart and reconnect path and check what YouTube displays after the encoder returns.
The available guidance does not establish a particular FFmpeg command for this workflow, nor does it guarantee that restarting an encoder preserves the same YouTube broadcast. Media paths, codec handling, playlist behavior, and reconnect options depend on the file and encoder configuration. Validate those details on your chosen VPS instead of copying an untested command into a 24/7 service.

Test and monitor the stream
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast and verify that YouTube receives both picture and sound.
- Include representative movement and audio in the test; a still or silent sample may not reveal the problems in the real program.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while the encoder is running, and inspect the VPS logs for encoder errors, restarts, or resource pressure.
- Test a controlled encoder stop and restart. Confirm whether YouTube reconnects as expected and whether you need to resume or create a broadcast in the Live Control Room.
- Check transfer usage and server resource use after the test; then adjust bitrate, output settings, or the VPS plan before scheduling continuous operation.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guide. That statement does not establish indefinite operation of a single stream or guarantee an archive for a longer broadcast. If an archive matters, verify the current YouTube guidance and test the specific broadcast workflow you plan to use.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow for the first-time activation period, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder is using the correct server URL and the matching stream key, and that the VPS can reach the chosen RTMPS endpoint. Keep the key private while correcting it.
- Stream health reports problems or the picture stalls: Check the VPS’s sustained CPU load, available memory, outbound route, bitrate, and encoder logs. Test at a lower supported output setting if the server cannot sustain the current one.
- Audio or video is missing: Confirm that the selected encoder can decode the source codecs and that the output includes the intended audio and video. Test using the actual media, not only a different sample.
- The stream returns after a process restart but the broadcast does not behave as expected: The restart itself does not prove YouTube will preserve the same broadcast. Check the Live Control Room, review logs, and test the recovery procedure before depending on it.
- The monthly data allowance runs out: Recalculate transfer from the sustained bitrate and scheduled hours, include overhead, and check the provider’s overage or throttling terms. Lowering bitrate may reduce transfer but also changes delivered quality.
- The VPS stops or becomes inaccessible: Use the provider console and recovery tools, inspect service and system logs, and verify that your media and configuration are backed up. Provider-specific recovery behavior varies by plan.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud: upload the content, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not live camera input. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
