To make a YouTube live stream reconnect after a disconnection, enable automatic reconnect in your encoder. In OBS Studio, turn on Automatically Reconnect and set a retry delay and maximum number of retries in the output settings. This makes OBS retry its connection; it does not guarantee that the YouTube broadcast will recover in every case.
YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop setting is different: it lets the encoder start or stop a stream. YouTube’s help page does not describe it as a reconnect mechanism. If retries fail, check the encoder, stream key, connection stability, and bitrate, then verify recovery in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
How OBS automatic reconnect works
OBS handles retrying its output connection. When it detects a disconnection, it waits and tries again according to the reconnect settings. OBS documents that the wait doubles after each attempt; the maximum retry count limits how many times it will try, and setting the count to zero disables reconnecting. These controls govern OBS’s attempts, not a guaranteed recovery window or outcome for the YouTube event. OBS stream connection troubleshooting and the OBS output reference describe the behavior; exact labels and menu locations may vary by OBS version.
Turn on reconnecting
- In OBS Studio, open Settings, then Output.
- Find the reconnect controls and enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose a retry delay and maximum retries. OBS does not prescribe one universally best value; choose settings suited to your broadcast and avoid assuming that a high retry count will fix a persistent network problem.
- Apply the settings, then test before an important broadcast by confirming that the encoder can reconnect and that the YouTube player continues or resumes as expected.
OBS labels and settings can change between releases, so if the path differs, check the output settings in your installed version and consult the OBS output reference.

Does YouTube automatically reconnect a live stream?
Do not treat YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop option as automatic recovery. YouTube describes it as a way to start or stop streaming from the encoder. It does not, in the cited help guidance, promise to retry a dropped encoder connection or restore every viewer-facing event after an interruption. YouTube’s stream settings help
Recovery therefore depends on what the encoder can do and whether the cause of the disconnection has cleared. A brief interruption may be followed by a successful retry; an ongoing upload, equipment, or routing problem can prevent reconnection.

What to check when OBS cannot reconnect
Confirm the encoder and YouTube destination
- Check that OBS is still attempting to stream and that the output is configured for the intended YouTube event.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.
- Verify that OBS is using the correct stream key and server URL. YouTube describes stream keys as information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder. YouTube encoder settings
Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate that the connection cannot maintain. Use a stable upload-speed test as a guide, then set the stream bitrate to a level the connection can sustain consistently. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; a single speed-test result does not establish that upload capacity will remain stable throughout a stream. OBS stream connection troubleshooting
YouTube also advises matching stream quality to the internet connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

Check Wi-Fi, cables, network equipment, and software
- Use Ethernet where practical. OBS says, “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming.”
- Inspect the Ethernet cable and check the modem, router, network card, switches, and extenders; any can contribute to a connection problem.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, bundled network-optimization application, or outdated network driver is interfering with the encoder’s connection.
- If local checks do not resolve the issue, contact your internet service provider. Routing congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control.
These are troubleshooting paths, not proof that any one item caused a particular outage. OBS’s full guidance is in its connection troubleshooting guide.
How to verify recovery and prepare a backup
For a routine stream, reconnect settings and a check of the YouTube preview may be sufficient. For a high-stakes broadcast, YouTube recommends preparing and testing encoder failover in advance. A backup encoder is a separate recovery approach from retrying the same encoder: it switches the feed to another encoder if the primary fails, and it should be tested rather than assumed to work.

- Set up the encoders before the scheduled broadcast and start them ahead of time.
- Check the YouTube preview, verify that the event is accessible, and monitor audio and video quality.
- Check that the local archive recording is growing while the stream runs.
- Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
YouTube gives this procedure in its live streaming tips. A backup encoder is useful for events where tested redundancy matters; it is not necessary for every casual stream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can OBS reconnect after I close the program?
No. OBS’s reconnect setting applies while OBS is running and attempting to send its output; it cannot retry after the encoder has been closed.
Will automatic reconnect keep viewers from noticing an interruption?
Not necessarily. OBS retries its connection, but whether viewers see a continuous or recovered broadcast depends on the interruption and successful delivery to YouTube.
