YouTube lists 8 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p30; its recommendation for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. Choose the higher setting only if your computer and sustained upload connection can handle it with headroom. These are starting points, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream.
Recommended OBS settings for a podcast stream
Use this as a starting configuration for a mostly static podcast scene. OBS menus and available encoders vary by installed version and hardware, so verify the actual output rather than assuming every computer offers the same options.

The codec, bitrate, keyframe, audio and color guidance comes from YouTube’s encoder settings documentation.
Choose between 720p30 and 1080p30
For a static podcast image or a speaker in a fixed frame, 720p30 is often a sensible starting point. Moving to 1080p30 can provide more visual detail, but it raises the bandwidth and encoding load. YouTube’s H.264 table lists these figures:

These are YouTube’s current recommendations, checked on 2026-10-03, not measurements of Indian broadband and not a promise that a connection will remain stable. Pick 1080p30 only after testing the actual scene over an extended run and confirming that the computer encodes reliably.
Calculate the upload capacity you need
Video bitrate is not the whole stream: include audio bitrate, then leave upload capacity in reserve. YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a stream configured with 8 Mbps video and 128 Kbps audio has a nominal combined bitrate of about 8.128 Mbps; 20% additional capacity puts the connection target at roughly 9.75 Mbps before allowing for other devices or network activity. This is a planning calculation, not a claim about the speed available at any particular Indian address.

YouTube explains the headroom recommendation in its streaming tips. Test sustained upload performance at the location and time you plan to stream, and account for other household network use and any backup stream. A brief speed-test result alone does not show that a home connection will remain steady for a long session.
Configure OBS and YouTube in order
- Enable live streaming and create the stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Copy the stream key into OBS only; treat it like a password, do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube describes stream settings and key management in Manage live stream settings.
- Set OBS output to match your chosen YouTube ingest format. Select H.264, CBR, the chosen resolution and frame rate, the matching video bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set audio to AAC or MP3 as available, stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and SDR color to Rec. 709, 8-bit. Choose RTMPS when available.
- Check the actual encoder and output. OBS options depend on the build and supported hardware. Confirm that the selected encoder is producing the intended codec and settings; do not assume every computer exposes the same hardware encoder.
- Run a real test before relying on the stream. Use the actual microphone, audio levels, scene, and motion. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live.
- Verify playback from a viewer’s perspective. Confirm the live page opens on your channel and check it on a mobile device. Listen and watch for quality problems while the stream is running.
- Monitor a long run. Keep an eye on stream health, audio and video during the broadcast. If viewers need to pause, rewind, and resume, consider DVR. If the podcast is not interactive, ultra-low latency is usually not a priority; lower latency can increase playback buffering.
What settings cannot guarantee
No OBS preset alone makes a home-computer stream continuously available. A long-running broadcast still depends on the computer, software, sustained network connection, power, heat and local conditions. The cited YouTube guidance emphasizes testing, reliable connectivity and monitoring; it does not establish an India-specific ISP speed or power-backup requirement, nor does it guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

For a continuous show, also ensure you have the rights to the audio, video and other material in the stream. YouTube’s live-stream guidance covers setup and operation, but these settings do not establish that particular content is cleared for use or eligible under YouTube’s policies. Do not treat a technically healthy stream as evidence that its content is copyright-safe.
Troubleshoot common stream problems
- Stream health reports connection or bitrate problems: Check the sustained upload connection, reduce competing network activity, and make sure total stream bitrate—including audio—leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If needed, test at 720p30 rather than 1080p30.
- Video drops frames or the computer struggles: Confirm the selected encoder is supported and that the machine can sustain it in a long test. Try the lower 720p30 output and reassess rather than increasing bitrate by guesswork.
- YouTube preview has no picture or the format is rejected: Verify that OBS is sending the selected H.264 resolution and frame rate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Compare the full output with YouTube’s encoder requirements.
- Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync: Check the correct microphone source, its level and mute state in OBS, then make a test recording or private test stream using the production scene. Confirm stereo, sample rate and codec settings are supported.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key. Do not share screenshots or configuration files containing credentials.
- Viewers cannot pause or rewind: Review whether DVR is enabled in the YouTube stream settings; DVR is the feature YouTube says lets viewers pause, rewind and resume.
