Set the resolution, frame rate and bitrate to what the computer and internet connection can sustain, then test the setup before relying on it. One important catch: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its automatic archive, so record locally if you need a complete copy.
Before you start: check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the day you plan to start. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live-streaming tips.
- A spare PC that can run an encoder at your chosen output settings.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload bandwidth for the stream.
- An encoder application. YouTube identifies OBS among its verified encoder options; it does not require expensive equipment to get started.
- The video and audio you plan to send. Test the same type of content and motion you expect to stream.
YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal minimum PC specification or guarantee that any particular spare computer will run indefinitely. The practical test is whether your own PC, encoder, power and network remain stable at the settings you choose.
How to set up a 24/7 YouTube stream from an old PC
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder. Complete any channel verification or eligibility steps and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the matching fields in your encoder. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key associates it with your YouTube stream.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube supports reusable custom keys and provides controls to reset a compromised key; see Manage live stream settings.
- Choose a sustainable output. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate that both the PC and connection can handle. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists video codecs H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, plus AAC or MP3 audio, for standard RTMP/RTMPS streaming. Your encoder and source must support the codec you select.
- Use constant bitrate and configure keyframes. YouTube specifies CBR (constant bitrate) and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the setting fields in your encoder.
- Set bitrate with network headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between the stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a given PC or internet plan will deliver a stable stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before going public. Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify that picture and sound are correct. Test with representative audio and movement, and check access from the channel or watch page and a mobile device.
- Plan how to retain the broadcast. If the full 24-hour program matters, start a local recording in your encoder and make sure the PC has sufficient storage for the recording format and duration. YouTube recommends a local archive as backup.
What bitrate and settings should you use?
There is no single preset that is right for every spare PC. Higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding capacity and typically more upload bandwidth; use YouTube’s table for your target and reduce the output if your actual test is unstable.

These figures are platform recommendations for H.264, not measured performance on your computer. YouTube’s guidance also allows up to 60 fps for standard RTMP/RTMPS and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of 4 seconds. Can you leave OBS running all day?
An encoder such as OBS can send the feed while it is running, but the PC, encoder, power and network all need to keep working. A software setting cannot prevent every interruption caused by a restart, power loss, a PC problem or an internet outage. Test the exact setup for a meaningful stretch before treating it as dependable, and monitor the Live Control Room’s stream health.

If a wired connection is practical, it is one option for a stable network; YouTube does not require Ethernet for every stream. Whatever connection you use, test the actual route and connection that will be in place during the broadcast.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy of a 24-hour stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” For a continuous stream, run a local recording if you need the complete program and plan storage around your chosen settings and retention period. Troubleshooting a spare-PC stream
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm that the stream URL and key are entered in the correct fields and that the stream is set up in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- Stream health shows connection problems: Check whether available upload bandwidth can sustain the selected bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Try a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate, then test again.
- The picture stutters or the PC struggles: Reduce resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. The official guidance does not specify a universal spare-PC minimum, so base the choice on your machine’s observed ability to encode the output.
- The preview has no sound or the wrong picture: Check the encoder’s selected audio and video sources, then confirm them in the Live Control Room preview before going public.
- The broadcast is live but there is no complete replay: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use the local recording as the preservation copy when the full duration matters.
