A computer running your YouTube encoder cannot keep sending the stream after the computer enters system sleep. To keep a podcast livestream going, prevent sleep for the duration of the broadcast; you can usually turn off the display separately. If the computer itself must be off or asleep, use a separately configured encoder device or move the prerecorded show to a cloud streaming service.
Why the stream stops when your computer sleeps
When you stream from an encoder app on your computer, that computer is the source sending video and audio to YouTube. System sleep suspends the computer’s work, so do not expect its encoder to continue transmitting. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires you to enter a stream URL and stream key in the software or hardware encoder you use. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes both computer software and standalone hardware options.
The fix for a computer-based stream is to keep the computer awake, not to change a YouTube setting. A screen turning off is different from system sleep, so you can often let the display go dark while the computer continues streaming.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake during the stream
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- For the power condition you will use, set Make my device sleep after to a period longer than the entire broadcast. If available and appropriate, choose a setting that prevents sleep while plugged in.
- Set Turn my screen off after separately if you want the display to turn off. The display can go dark while the computer stays awake.
- If you plan to close a laptop lid, check When I close the lid in Power Options. Many laptops sleep when the lid closes, which can stop the encoder even if the sleep timeout is otherwise long enough.
Windows options may differ by device. Microsoft explains the separate display and sleep controls in its Windows 11 power settings guidance and discusses laptop sleep and lid behavior in its PC sleep and shutdown guidance.

Keep a Mac laptop awake while its display is off
On a Mac laptop, Apple documents a Battery setting called Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Enable it and keep the Mac connected to power for a long broadcast. Menu labels and their locations can vary by macOS release, so check the Battery settings on the Mac you are using. This setting prevents automatic sleep with the display off; it does not let a sleeping Mac keep encoding.

Test the YouTube stream before the podcast starts
- In your encoder, enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup.
- Start the encoder and check that its preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room before starting the event.
- Confirm the stream is healthy, then go live and monitor it during the broadcast.
- When the YouTube event has ended, stop the encoder. YouTube recommends testing, checking stream health, and stopping the encoder after the event.
See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and its live encoder settings and stream metrics guidance. Keeping the computer awake does not protect against every interruption: power loss, network outages, encoder problems, operating-system updates, or YouTube issues can still affect a stream.
If the computer itself must sleep or be unavailable
A standalone hardware encoder is a separate option: it handles encoding and transmission instead of an app running on the computer. YouTube supports hardware encoders, but the device must be configured for your YouTube workflow. Before buying one, verify its inputs, networking, and supported streaming protocol. No particular model is established here as suitable for every podcast setup.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream stops when the screen goes dark: Check whether the computer entered system sleep, rather than merely turning off its display. Extend or disable the sleep timeout for the active power condition.
- The stream stops when you close the laptop: Review the lid-close action in Windows Power Options. On a Mac, use the documented power-adapter setting and keep the laptop plugged in.
- YouTube has no preview: Confirm the encoder is running and that the stream URL and stream key were entered correctly. Check Live Control Room before starting the event.
- The stream is interrupted despite sleep being disabled: Check power, network connectivity, encoder status, and Live Control Room stream health. Awake settings alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
- The YouTube event has ended but the encoder is still running: Stop the encoder after the event ends on YouTube.
