Reporting by The Washington Post says David Flippo received a Bronze Star for service, not the Bronze Star with valor, while his campaign described the award as “for valor” in a 2023 video and at least two 2026 fundraising solicitations. Flippo blamed an editing mistake for the video wording and called it an honest mistake; his spokesperson said a copywriter reused old talking points in a later solicitation. Photos of Flippo wearing a cap with a Bronze Star pin and two V-shaped devices raise a separate question, but they do not establish who chose the pins or what he intended them to signal.
What did Flippo and his campaign say about the Bronze Star?
The Washington Post reported on September 24, 2026, that Flippo received a Bronze Star in 2004 for service, not a Bronze Star with valor. The paper said his campaign described the award as received “for valor” in a 2023 announcement video and repeated that description in at least two fundraising solicitations in 2026. After the Post contacted the campaign, the old video was deleted from social media. The Washington Post’s account documents the reporting and the campaign’s response.
Flippo’s explanation
Flippo told the Post: “Three years ago, our video editors made a mistake and tried to combine these two awards for a commercial.” He apologized for not paying closer attention and called the exaggeration an honest mistake. His explanation is that the video editors combined the Bronze Star with another decoration, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor.
The spokesperson’s explanation
Separately, a spokesperson said a copywriter accidentally reused old talking points in a recent fundraising message. These are the campaign’s explanations for the wording; the available reporting does not independently establish how the errors occurred.

What is the difference between a Bronze Star and one with valor?
The distinction is not a matter of wording alone. The Post quoted the Air Force Personnel Center’s definition of the valor device: it denotes “an act or acts of heroism by an individual above what is normally expected while engaged in direct combat with an enemy of the United States, or an opposing foreign or armed force, with exposure to enemy hostilities and personal risk.”
The Bronze Star may be awarded for valor or for meritorious service. Those are different distinctions: receiving a Bronze Star for service does not, by itself, mean the recipient received it for valor. The Post’s description of the award and the valor device appears in its September 24 report and in its cited reference to the Air Force Personnel Center’s decorations information.

What do the V-shaped devices on Flippo’s hat establish?
Nevada News & Views reported that campaign images showed Flippo wearing a cap with a Bronze Star pin and two V-shaped devices. The outlet also reported that he later appeared publicly in a plain green cap. Retired Air Force Master Sergeant Daniel J. Casentini interpreted the devices as valor symbols and questioned why two appeared beside the Bronze Star. He said the Outstanding Unit Award with Valor could account for one V device; the official uniform photograph discussed in the article showed no V device on the Bronze Star ribbon. Nevada News & Views’ report presents Casentini’s interpretation.
Casentini characterized the display as, in his opinion, an attempt to mislead voters. That is his interpretation, not an established finding about Flippo’s intent. A photograph of pins on a cap cannot show who attached or selected them, or what the wearer intended viewers to infer.

Mother Jones reported on October 2 that veterans had offered interpretations of the V symbols and that the campaign had not responded to its questions about them. The account also mentioned the possibility that one V related to the unit award. Mother Jones’ follow-up adds those reported reactions; it does not resolve who chose the hat’s devices or why.

The campaign’s repeated “for valor” wording and the images of the hat are distinct pieces of evidence. The Post reported multiple campaign descriptions of the Bronze Star as awarded for valor, along with the campaign’s explanations of how that wording appeared. Nevada News & Views and Mother Jones reported on the hat and veterans’ interpretations of its devices. Neither the photographs nor those interpretations independently prove Flippo’s intent. Doug Sterner, a military awards expert and recipient of two Bronze Stars, told the Post, “It amounts to a lie,” and described the repeated claims as a pattern of deception. That is Sterner’s judgment about the reported wording, not a finding about who selected the hat’s pins.
