His warning reflected the Padres’ late-season surge, their bullpen and star power—not just their reputation: San Diego had won 20 of its previous 23 games, while Milwaukee had won 15 of 18.
What Murphy said about San Diego
“They’re playing so well and they’re super talented, a super talented, confident team right now with, we all know, the best bullpen in baseball, with some real megastars in the lineup,” Murphy said. “And they’re rolling. But that’s what you’re going to face at this time of year.”
Murphy’s “best bullpen in baseball” description is his assessment, not a separately established ranking in the Associated Press report. The report’s case for why the matchup looked difficult was concrete: San Diego was winning at a rapid clip, had high-profile hitters and could lean on a bullpen featuring Mason Miller.
Why the Padres looked dangerous
A sharp late-season turnaround
San Diego had been below .500 in late July, then surged to win 20 of its last 23 games entering the series and swept the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card Series, according to the AP report. Milwaukee was also in strong form, with 15 wins in its previous 18 games. The clubs arrived hot, but the Padres’ finish made them a particularly formidable opponent.

Relief pitching that could shape close games
The AP report highlighted both bullpens as a key series factor. It singled out Padres reliever Mason Miller, whose figures in that report were a 1.67 ERA, a 47.4% strikeout rate and a .152 opponent batting average. For Milwaukee, relievers Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill were noted for holding opponents below a .200 batting average.
Those numbers are the figures reported in the AP account, not an independent statistical comparison. In a best-of-five series, strong relief options can matter when a starter exits early or a game is close late; the report’s focus on both teams’ bullpens made that a central matchup storyline.

Stars, defense and speed
Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts described a team that can create pressure without relying on home runs: “You have to bring your ‘A’ game, because they’re just a team that’s a headache,” he said. “It’s not like a swing-and-miss (where) they’re going for the home run or nothing. They play good defense, run the bases, a lot of guys with speed.”
Murphy also pointed to “real megastars in the lineup.” The AP report listed young players on both sides, including San Diego’s Ethan Salas and Jackson Merrill and Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio, Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara, as potential starting position players under 24. It reported that Salas became the youngest catcher to play a postseason game when he started Game 2 of the Wild Card Series. Milwaukee starters Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson were listed as 24, while Padres reliever Bradgley Rodriguez was 22.

How the pitching matchups and home field set the stage
Milwaukee entered with home-field advantage after a 103-59 regular season, which the AP report described as the majors’ best record. The report listed Jacob Misiorowski against Robbie Ray as the Game 1 matchup and Michael King against Logan Henderson as the likely Game 2 matchup. “Likely” matters here: these were pre-series assignments as reported, not confirmation of what ultimately took place.
The report also said Milwaukee earned home-field advantage throughout the postseason for a second straight year. The Brewers had lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a sweep in the previous year’s National League Championship Series. The series against San Diego therefore paired Milwaukee’s season-long record and home advantage with a Padres team carrying considerable late-season momentum.

One Milwaukee availability note was also still an expectation, not a confirmed status: Murphy anticipated that Joey Ortiz, who had dealt with knee and abdominal issues, would be ready to start the series.

Murphy had managed San Diego as interim manager in 2015, after the Padres fired Bud Black. The AP report said he went 42-54 in the role. Looking back, Murphy said: “I wouldn’t have retained me then either, you know what I mean? I wasn’t ready to be the major-league manager he needed.”

That past job gave Murphy personal experience with the organization, but his pre-series assessment centered on the team San Diego had become: confident, on a strong run and equipped with a bullpen and lineup he respected.
What was at stake for both clubs
Both franchises were still seeking their first World Series title, according to the AP report. Milwaukee’s only World Series appearance was in 1982; San Diego had appeared in 1984 and 1998. The clubs’ postseason histories added context, while the immediate test was a best-of-five series that Milwaukee was scheduled to open at home.
The AP report also cited Sportradar for Milwaukee’s record during Murphy’s three-year tenure: 293-193 in the regular season, including a 6-13 record against San Diego over that span and 2-4 in the current season. Those head-to-head figures offered a small historical wrinkle, but they did not erase the larger contrast entering the series: Milwaukee’s 103-win season and home field against a Padres club that had finished exceptionally well.
