As of the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee forecast issued October 3, 2026, the western Florida Panhandle had a Flood Watch for 3–6 inches of rain, locally 8–10 inches; elsewhere in the forecast area, including Tallahassee, the forecast was generally 2–5 inches. Tallahassee and Leon County were not listed in that watch. Forecasts and alerts can change, so check current NWS products before making plans.
Why repeated downpours are possible
The NWS Tallahassee said abundant tropical moisture was over the region on October 3, with precipitable water values of 2.2–2.5 inches. That is a measure of moisture in the atmosphere, not a forecast of how much rain will fall. Moisture being funneled across the area is expected to fuel off-and-on downpours rather than just one isolated storm.
Some downpours could drop 1–2 inches in less than an hour, according to the NWS. A shortwave moving along the northern Gulf Coast late Saturday evening into Sunday was expected to raise the risk of flooding rain, especially in the western Panhandle. Rain chances continue into early next week as a trough and nearby front affect the region, but the timing is less certain: Monday or Tuesday could be wetter depending on how those features move.
Where the forecast and Flood Watch differ
The NWS Tallahassee Flood Watch issued at 12:52 a.m. EDT Saturday was effective from 11 a.m. Saturday through Monday morning. It covered western Panhandle zones in Walton, Holmes, Washington, Bay and Gulf counties. The watch forecast 3–6 inches of rain, with locally higher totals up to 8–10 inches.

For the rest of the NWS Tallahassee forecast area, the October 3 morning discussion expected generally 2–5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Tallahassee and Leon County were not included in the cited watch. The NWS said eastward expansion was possible, but confidence was not high enough at that time to issue one.
A forecast-area risk is not the same as a formal watch. A watch means flooding is possible in the listed places and time window; it does not mean flooding is certain. Because watch and warning boundaries can change, check the NWS Tallahassee live forecast and alerts for the latest information.

Why brief heavy rain can flood streets before rivers rise
Fast runoff in urban and low-lying places
High rainfall rates can overwhelm drainage systems, particularly in urban areas and other places where water has few routes to drain. That can cause nuisance or flash flooding even when a major river flood is not expected. A quick inch or two in under an hour can be consequential locally, regardless of the broader multi-day rainfall total.
River response is a separate concern
The NWS discussion said mainstem rivers were less likely to have significant issues under the general 2–5 inch forecast because conditions beforehand were drier. If widespread rainfall reached 6 inches or more, however, some rivers could approach action stage and smaller streams could see minor flooding.

Separately, the NWS hazards page listed a Flood Warning for the Shoal River near Crestview, west of Tallahassee. Minor flooding was forecast to begin Monday evening, with a crest of 9.0 feet Tuesday morning. That warning concerns the Crestview area and should not be read as a river-flood forecast for Tallahassee or Leon County.

What to watch for through early next week
- Saturday into Sunday: Repeated downpours are possible, with the highest cited flooding-rain potential in the western Panhandle late Saturday evening into Sunday.
- Monday and Tuesday: Rain remains possible, but the timing of the wetter period is uncertain.
- Changing alerts: Monitor the NWS Tallahassee page for updated forecasts, watches and warnings; a live product can change after an earlier forecast discussion.
How to stay safer around floodwater
- Do not drive through flooded roads or go around barricades. Water depth and road condition can be difficult to judge.
- If a Flash Flood Warning is issued for your area, follow the warning instructions and be ready to move away from flooding.
- Remember the NWS Tallahassee guidance: “Remember, turn around, dont drown!”
