A full archive destination is Oracle’s likeliest explanation, but a failed destination marked MANDATORY can also cause the error. Connect with the administrative access indicated by the error, inspect the alert log and trace files, and correct the specific destination failure before assuming that cleanup is safe.
What ORA-00257 means
Oracle’s error reference describes ORA-00257 as “Archiver error. Connect AS SYSDBA only until resolved.” The archiver received an error while trying to archive a redo log. Oracle warns that if the problem is not resolved soon, the database will stop executing transactions. Oracle Database Error Messages: ORA-00257
Disk space is the leading hypothesis, not a diagnosis. Oracle identifies an archive-destination device without space as the most likely cause, and also lists failure of a destination marked MANDATORY. The accompanying error in the alert log or trace files is needed to establish what failed.
How to diagnose the failed archive destination
- Connect using the administrative access named in the error. ORA-00257 limits connections to SYSDBA until the issue is resolved.
- Inspect the database alert log and trace files. Oracle specifically directs administrators to these records for the underlying archiver error. Use the error stack and related entries to identify the archive destination and failure.
- Check the destination’s type and state. Archive targets may be local filesystem paths, ASM disk groups, the Fast Recovery Area (FRA), or remote destinations that use a service for a standby database. In Oracle Database 19c, destination status includes validity, enablement, and activity; `V$ARCHIVE_DEST` provides destination-status information. Do not assume every configured path is local or that every destination is optional. Oracle Database 19c: Archived Redo Log Files
- Determine whether an FRA limit is actually involved. ORA-19809 means the limit for recovery files specified by `DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE` was exceeded. It can explain an FRA capacity problem, but it does not establish that every ORA-00257 is an FRA issue. Oracle Database Error Messages: ORA-19809
- Match the correction to the diagnosed cause. Resolve the capacity, path, availability, or required-destination failure shown by the diagnostics. Avoid deleting files or changing destination requirements as a generic first step.
- Verify recovery. Confirm that archiving is proceeding and that the affected destination reports a healthy state using the checks appropriate to the database release and configuration.
If the Fast Recovery Area limit is exceeded
When diagnostics confirm an FRA limit problem, Oracle documents several possible approaches. They are alternatives to evaluate against the database’s recovery design, not a universal sequence of commands. Oracle Database 19c: Maintaining RMAN Backups

| Approach | When to consider it | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Back up files with RMAN | When backup activity can relieve recovery-area pressure while supporting the recovery objectives. | Confirm that the resulting backup and retention plan preserve the required recovery capability. |
| Review the retention policy or archived-log deletion policy | When policy settings affect which recovery files remain eligible for removal. | Do not weaken policies or remove logs without checking recovery and standby requirements. |
| Add disk capacity and raise `DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE` | When the storage can be expanded and the configured limit should reflect that available capacity. | Increasing the configured limit alone does not create physical storage space. |
| Delete files from the recovery area using RMAN | When diagnostics and recovery policy establish that specific files can safely be removed. | Use RMAN-managed operations and verify the recovery consequences before deletion. |
Oracle’s archived-redo guidance warns that a disk-full error during archiving can produce a fatal error and stop the database from responding; it also recommends sufficient space and alert-log checks. That makes capacity a serious possibility, but the destination’s actual error remains the basis for action. Oracle Database 19c: Archived Redo Log Files
Why a full disk is not the only explanation
Oracle 19c supports multiple archive destinations, including filesystem, ASM, FRA, and remote standby-service targets. If multiple destinations are configured, copies may be written to each. A failure’s effect depends on which destination failed and whether the configuration requires it; a failed MANDATORY destination is one documented cause. Check the destination that produced the error rather than applying a general disk-cleanup remedy. Oracle Database 19c: Archived Redo Log Files
