Does OGG Sound Good? Understanding Ogg, Vorbis Quality and Lossless Audio

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OGG can sound very good, but the .ogg extension alone does not tell you how good a file will sound. Ogg is a container; Vorbis is one lossy audio codec it can hold. The result depends on the codec, its settings and the audio source. Vorbis is a practical choice for smaller files, while FLAC is the option when you need exact, lossless reproduction.

Ogg and Vorbis are not the same thing

Ogg is a multimedia container: it packages encoded streams and can interleave audio, video and metadata. It also provides packet framing, error detection and timestamps that help with seeking, as described in Xiph.org’s Ogg overview. Vorbis is an audio codec designed to be stored in that container.

Ogg can also carry other formats, including FLAC and Speex. So “Ogg quality” is not a single setting, and a filename ending in .ogg does not prove that the audio is Vorbis or reveal its quality. The Vorbis specification distinguishes audio-only from multimedia MIME types, including audio/ogg, video/ogg and application/ogg for different contexts (Vorbis I specification).

What Vorbis quality settings mean

Vorbis is lossy: encoding removes some audio information to reduce file size, so decoding does not reproduce the original exactly. Xiph.org describes Vorbis quality on a subjective scale from -1 to 10; the setting is not a fixed bitrate target. Its FAQ gives these approximate averages, not guarantees:

Vorbis quality setting Approximate average bitrate What to know
0 About 64 kbps Average cited by Xiph.org Foundation; the FAQ does not state a publication year.
3 (default) About 110 kbps Average cited by Xiph.org Foundation; the FAQ does not state a publication year.
5 About 160 kbps Xiph says this is commonly used for very-near-CD-quality audio, not exact reproduction.
6 Not stated Xiph notes this setting may be chosen when seeking lossless stereo coupling.
10 About 400 kbps Average cited by Xiph.org Foundation; the FAQ does not state a publication year.

These settings use variable bitrate encoding: the bitrate can rise or fall around the average as needed to pursue the selected quality. Xiph’s general Vorbis format page separately gives a range of 16–128 kbps per channel; that broad range is not a conversion table for the settings above. The same page says the Vorbis I bitstream was frozen on May 8, 2000 (Xiph.org’s Vorbis format overview).

There is no universal setting that will sound transparent to every listener on every recording. Xiph’s FAQ presents quality 5, or 6 when seeking lossless stereo coupling, as a common choice for very-near-CD-quality audio, but emphasizes that lossy encoding does not provide exact CD-quality reproduction. These are official guidance, not results from a contemporary comparative listening test. The FAQ also quotes Segher Boessenkool saying that when moving to a newer Vorbis encoder, keeping the same quality setting can yield smaller files that sound the same; keeping the same nominal bitrate can yield similar-size files that sound somewhat better. That describes the distinction between targeting quality and targeting bitrate, not a guarantee for every encoder or track.

Why the source file matters

Re-encoding an MP3 as Vorbis cannot restore details already discarded by MP3 encoding. It adds another lossy generation, and the result cannot be better than the original MP3 source in fidelity. When creating Vorbis files, start from an original lossless source where possible; Xiph makes the same recommendation in its Vorbis FAQ.

For an existing file, the extension and bitrate alone cannot tell you whether it will sound good. Check which codec is inside the container, how it was encoded, and whether its source was already lossy. A higher bitrate is not a repair for a poor source.

When FLAC is the better choice

Choose FLAC if you need lossless compression: it reduces file size while preserving the audio data for exact decoding. Xiph describes FLAC as a lossless format designed for audio, and explains that Ogg FLAC means FLAC data stored inside an Ogg container (FLAC FAQ). This is why “Ogg versus FLAC” is not always a container-versus-container comparison: Vorbis and FLAC are codecs, while Ogg is a container.

  • Choose Vorbis when smaller files matter and lossy compression is acceptable.
  • Choose FLAC when you want lossless archiving, editing, or a source from which to make later lossy copies.

Check playback compatibility before relying on an Ogg file

Xiph’s FAQ names software such as Winamp, foobar2000 and Whamb as examples of programs that support Vorbis. That does not establish support on a particular current phone, car stereo or portable player. The Vorbis specification also does not require every compliant Vorbis player to support every kind of Ogg multiplexing beyond the specific Vorbis-in-Ogg stream.
