Use Nano Banana 2 to create a draft, review it for accuracy and crop safety, then upload it in WordPress and set it as the post’s featured image. The key is to design for the way your theme displays images—not to assume one generated size or aspect ratio will fit every post, archive, and card.
What Nano Banana 2 is—and which route to use
Nano Banana 2 is Google’s name for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Google documents image generation, editing, rapid iteration, and image-text capabilities in its launch announcement and Gemini API documentation.
For a straightforward blog image, Gemini Apps offers a guided generation and editing route. The Gemini API is a developer-oriented alternative when you need to integrate image generation into an application or workflow. The model identifier, available options, account access, and output limits depend on the route; consult the Gemini Apps instructions or API documentation for the method you actually use.
Plan the image around the article and your theme
Start by deciding what the image needs to communicate. It might literally depict the article’s main subject, illustrate an idea, show a product or place, or follow a branded visual style. Choose a composition that still makes sense if the edges are cropped: keep the important subject near the center and avoid putting essential details at the far sides.

WordPress themes and configured image sizes affect where and how a featured image appears. A theme may show it on the article page, home page, blog index, or other post listings, and those contexts can crop or size it differently. WordPress’s Featured Image block documentation describes display controls, while the Media settings documentation explains image sizes. Check your own theme and preview the actual post and listing views rather than relying on a universal pixel dimension.
Write a prompt that describes a usable scene
Google’s prompting guidance recommends describing the subject, action, context, composition, and style, then refining the result with specific follow-up directions. Include visual details such as lighting, framing, and color when they matter to the article.

For example, adapt this template to the post:
Create a [style] editorial image for a WordPress article about [topic]. Show [main subject] [action] in [context]. Compose it as a [wide or landscape composition], with the key subject near the center and uncluttered space around the edges. Use [lighting and color palette]. Do not include text, logos, or invented interface details unless the article specifically requires them.
That final instruction is a prompt preference, not a guarantee. Google documents text rendering as a capability, but any lettering in an output still needs a spelling and accuracy check. For detailed interface screens, product labels, maps, or signs, compare what the image shows with the facts in the article. Generate, inspect, and revise
In Gemini Apps, open the image-generation experience, choose Images, enter your prompt or use a template, and review the result. You can make follow-up edits to a generated image or an uploaded one; the available steps are described in Google’s Gemini Apps help page.

- Subject match: Does the image represent the article accurately, rather than merely sharing its mood?
- Crop safety: Would the central subject remain clear in a narrower thumbnail or card?
- Factual details: Are signs, labels, products, maps, and interface elements correct?
- Visual defects: Look for distorted hands, text, shadows, objects, or background elements.
- Rights and privacy: Make sure any reference photo or recognizable person is appropriate for your intended use.
If something is wrong, revise one issue at a time and state both what should change and what should remain. That makes it easier to evaluate whether the next version addresses the problem.

Use the aspect ratio that best matches the theme’s actual display context or your site’s design system. If the same image appears in a full post and a cropped archive card, keep key content away from the edges and preview both. WordPress notes that themes and configured image sizes shape image display; Google documents multiple aspect ratios and resolutions for image generation. The right source dimensions therefore depend on your site, not on a single WordPress-wide featured-image rule.

For Gemini Apps, Google’s help page currently says downloads are 1K for users without an AI plan and 2K for users with a Google AI plan. These are route- and account-specific details, not a promise about API access or every third-party integration; check the current terms for the access method you use. The API documentation describes its own model options.
A larger generated file is not automatically the best web asset. WordPress treats image dimensions, file size, and resizing as separate considerations in its image size and quality guidance. Check that the image looks good at its displayed size and that the version served by your site is appropriate for the page.
Upload the image and set it as featured in WordPress
- Open the post in the WordPress editor and open the post settings sidebar.
- Find the Featured image control and select an existing image from the Media Library or upload the new file.
- Confirm the selection with Set featured image.
- Preview the post and any relevant archive or listing view where your theme displays the featured image.
WordPress also documents setting a selected image block as the featured image through its block menu. The exact display and linking behavior depends on the block controls and theme support. See the Page/Post Settings sidebar documentation and Featured Image block documentation.
Add useful metadata and make a final accessibility check
In the Media Library or image details, add a descriptive title if it will help you identify the asset later. Write alt text that conveys the image’s meaningful information in the context of the page; don’t stuff it with keywords or list decorative details that add no information. WordPress describes alt text as accessibility information in its Media Library documentation and Image block documentation. The alt text set on an individual Image block can differ from the Media Library default, so check the version used on the page.

If the theme’s rendered crop loses the subject, return to the source image or revise its composition rather than assuming the featured-image setting will correct it.
