The AI bull market could weaken if expected profits and productivity fail to justify valuations and spending, if trouble spreads among highly connected firms, or if physical infrastructure limits the buildout. These are downside risks identified in official reports—not evidence that a crash is inevitable. Some of the same reporting also points to strong earnings and cash flow at major hyperscalers, so the key question is whether returns keep pace with expectations.
1. AI valuations could outrun realized returns
Why it matters
AI-linked share prices reflect expectations about future earnings and productivity, not just current results. If investors mark down how profitable AI will be—or how much it will improve productivity—valuations could fall sharply. In its July 2026 outlook, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) describes a conditional downside scenario in which that reassessment leads to abrupt retrenchment in technology-intensive investment and sharp corrections in frothy valuations. The IMF notes that the effects could be amplified in markets where technology firms account for a large share.
This is a scenario, not a forecast that such a correction will happen. It does, however, make the gap between expected and realized returns central to the bull-market case.
2. Concentration and financial links could spread a shock
A connected AI value chain
AI investment is concentrated among a relatively small group of hyperscalers, chipmakers, infrastructure builders and companies buying AI services. Their relationships can overlap: firms may be one another’s customers, investors or financiers. The IMF’s 2026 Annual Report describes these circular financing arrangements as a channel through which problems at one firm could cascade to others. The Bank of England has also noted that a narrow set of AI-related companies has helped drive rising equity prices.

Concentration matters because a setback at a central company could affect more than that company’s share price. It could also put pressure on firms that depend on its spending, financing or customers. The reports identify a transmission risk; they do not establish that a cascade is already under way.
3. Capital spending and debt could outrun returns
The scale of the investment
The IMF’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report estimated $3.4 trillion in AI-related capital expenditure through 2029. It also reported that hyperscalers had raised more than $100 billion in bond financing since January 2025. These figures show the scale of planned investment and borrowing, but they do not by themselves establish that the spending will fail to earn a return.

The important counterpoint
In the same reporting, the IMF said earnings growth at major hyperscalers had kept pace with capital expenditure and their free cash flows remained high at the time. That is evidence against treating current spending as proof of an existing funding shortfall. The risk is that debt and investment create greater exposure if future AI returns disappoint. In its May 2026 report, the Federal Reserve recorded respondents’ concerns about debt-financed AI capital expenditure.
4. Power and infrastructure could constrain expansion
Data centers depend on physical capacity
AI data centers require electricity and supporting infrastructure. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported on 16 April 2026 that capital expenditure by five large technology companies exceeded $400 billion in 2025, driven by data-center investment. The IEA expected that spending to increase by a further 75% in 2026; that was a forecast, not a final result for the year.

The IEA has also described tightening bottlenecks and examined data-center power demand, energy affordability and security. If electricity or infrastructure is harder to secure, projects may face limits or costs that affect their economics. That is a potential constraint on the buildout, not proof that power shortages will stop AI expansion.

The bull case depends on durable gains
Investment can build AI capacity, but the lasting financial case depends on whether businesses deploy it in ways that generate productivity and durable commercial returns. The IMF’s July 2026 outlook identifies a downside scenario in which expectations for AI profitability or productivity are revised downward.

There is also evidence of an economic contribution, though it should not be confused with a company-level return. The IMF’s 2026 Annual Report overview estimates that AI-related technology investment added 0.5 percentage point to U.S. GDP growth in 2025. That is a macroeconomic estimate, not a measure of how much any particular company earned from AI. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 report also records labor-market weakness among concerns raised by respondents; that concern alone does not establish AI’s net effect on jobs or productivity.
Together, these risks describe ways the AI bull market could lose support: expectations may be too high, a concentrated network may transmit setbacks, spending may become harder to justify, infrastructure may constrain projects, or adoption may not generate the returns investors expect. None of those possibilities is a verdict that the boom must end; the evidence also includes substantial investment and, at major hyperscalers in the period the IMF examined, earnings growth and free cash flow that remained strong.
