Adobe forecasts that traffic from AI tools to U.S. retail sites will rise 130% year over year during the 2026 holiday season, Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The figure counts shoppers clicking through from an AI tool to a retailer; it is not a forecast that holiday sales will grow 130%.
What does AI-driven retail traffic mean?
Adobe uses the term for visits to retail websites that begin when a shopper clicks a link from an AI tool. A shopper might use an assistant to research a product or find deals, then follow a retailer link. The measure is referral traffic: it does not by itself show whether the visitor made a purchase, how much they spent, or whether AI influenced a purchase made later through another channel. Adobe’s earlier explanation of the click-through metric is available in its March 2025 analysis.
Is Adobe saying holiday sales will increase 130%?
No. The 130% figure is Adobe’s forecast for AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail sites during Nov. 1–Dec. 31, 2026. It is separate from Adobe’s forecast of $275.1 billion in total U.S. online sales over that period, up 6.7% year over year. One measures visits referred by AI tools; the other estimates e-commerce sales. The two figures should not be combined or treated as evidence that AI referrals will cause sales to rise.

These are traffic-growth forecasts, not estimates of each day’s sales growth or the share of purchases involving AI. Adobe’s forecast and stated scope are described in its September 28 announcement.
How does AI send shoppers to retailers?
AI tools can help shoppers research products, compare options, or look for deals. When a tool provides a retailer link and a shopper clicks it, the resulting visit can be counted as an AI referral. That pathway makes the traffic measure useful for tracking referrals, but it does not establish that AI caused an order or changed overall holiday spending. Adobe’s 2025 analysis also discussed consumer-reported uses such as product research and deal seeking; those reports describe use, not proof of sales impact.

How does this compare with last year?
Adobe reported that referrals from generative AI tools to retail sites increased 693.4% during the 2025 holiday season compared with the prior year. That is a reported result for the 2025 season, whereas 130% is a forecast for the 2026 season. The rates describe different year-over-year comparisons and should not be read as a like-for-like slowdown in an absolute volume of visits. Adobe’s January 7, 2026 recap reports the 2025 figure and attributes the following observation to Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights: “This 2025 holiday season, consumers embraced generative AI more than ever as a shopping assistant in their purchasing decisions.”
For more recent context, Adobe says AI-driven traffic to retail sites was up 127% year over year in August 2026. What data supports the forecast, and what remains uncertain?
Adobe says its forecast draws on Adobe Analytics data covering more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, 100 million SKUs, and 18 product categories, and describes its analysis as based on direct online transactions. Those are Adobe’s descriptions of its own dataset and methodology. The cited Adobe pages do not provide an independent validation of the 130% forecast or an error range, so it is best understood as a company forecast rather than a guaranteed outcome.
Historical figures also need their period and measure attached. Adobe’s March 2025 analysis reported that generative-AI referrals rose 1,300% during Nov. 1–Dec. 31, 2024, compared with the prior year, and 1,200% in February 2025 compared with July 2024. Those older comparisons use different windows and do not replace the 2026 holiday forecast.
