Some people taking GLP-1 medicines have reported slower-growing, brittle nails, but the available guidance does not establish that the drugs directly cause those changes or show how often they happen. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) connects the reports with significant weight loss and recommends moisturizing cuticles and seeking a dermatologist’s advice if symptoms persist.
What nail changes have people reported?
The AAD says some patients have reported slower nail growth and brittle nails after starting GLP-1 medicines. Its examples include semaglutide, liraglutide and tirzepatide, sold under brand names including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound. These are reports described in professional patient guidance, not results from a nail-specific controlled trial.
The AAD links the nail changes to significant weight loss. The available information does not resolve whether a particular change is due to the medicine, weight loss, or another factor. It also does not establish a nail-specific frequency, so there is no supported percentage for how likely this is to happen.
Does the evidence prove GLP-1 drugs cause brittle nails?
No. The AAD’s guidance identifies a possible association, but it does not demonstrate direct causation. The FDA’s summary of potential safety signals and labeling updates lists topics including alopecia for certain products and aspiration; the GLP-1 section cited does not list nail changes. That is a description of what appears in that summary, not a finding that rules out a nail association.

FDA’s FAERS collects reports from manufacturers, consumers and health professionals and is updated quarterly. Such reports can help flag issues for evaluation, but a report alone cannot show that a drug caused an event or how common it is. A 2026 pharmacovigilance study analyzed 2016–2025 FAERS reports about alopecia and GLP-1 medicines; it concerns hair loss, not nails, and cannot establish nail-specific risk.
What can you do about nail changes?
- Moisturize your cuticles. The AAD recommends this as basic self-care. Moisturizing may help with hydration and comfort, but it has not been shown here to reverse or prevent slower nail growth or brittleness.
- Talk with a dermatologist if symptoms persist. The AAD advises seeking a dermatologist’s help when self-care does not improve skin, hair or nail symptoms. A dermatologist can assess whether the change may be related to the medicine or another condition.
- Discuss medication questions with your prescriber. Do not stop or change a prescribed GLP-1 medicine based on nail changes alone; ask your clinician how to handle concerns about your treatment.
What the available evidence does not tell us
- How many people taking GLP-1 medicines experience brittle or slower-growing nails.
- Whether the medicine itself, significant weight loss or another factor explains an individual’s nail changes.
- Whether one GLP-1 medicine carries a greater nail risk than another.
These limits matter because findings about hair loss or totals of adverse-event reports are not substitutes for nail-specific evidence. FDA report totals for compounded medicines, for example, cover all reported events and do not provide nail-event counts or incidence rates.
