The September 28 explanation reflects the market narrative reported that day, not proof that either oil or yields alone caused the decline.
What happened in the September 28 session?
Reuters reported that U.S. stocks declined on Monday, September 28, with the Nasdaq leading losses. Investors were weighing higher oil prices and a continued climb in Treasury yields against concerns that inflation could persist and prompt further Fed tightening. Reuters also linked oil’s rise to uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations and potential risks to supply routes; those were contemporaneous explanations, not confirmation that any one factor accounted for the full market move. Reuters’ September 28 market report put U.S. crude’s settlement at $92.60 a barrel and Brent’s at $105.28.
In the same report, the 10-year Treasury yield was 5.251%, up from 5.181% late Friday, and the 2-year yield was 4.937%, up from 4.864%. Reuters cited CME FedWatch as showing roughly a 70% market-implied chance of another Fed rate increase in October. That was a time-specific market probability—not a Fed decision, and not a current estimate.
Why can rising Treasury yields weigh on stocks?
A Treasury yield is the return investors demand for holding a Treasury security. When yields rise, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall. Higher yields can also make bonds more competitive with stocks and raise the discount rate investors apply to expected corporate cash flows. That can put pressure on equity valuations, particularly for companies whose anticipated profits are farther in the future. It is a valuation mechanism, not a rule that every stock must fall when yields rise.

The quoted 10-year yield also needs a little context. The Treasury’s official par yield curve is derived from indicative quotations for recently auctioned Treasury securities, obtained by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at or near 3:30 p.m. each business day. A par yield is a curve-derived constant-maturity measure, not a record of a trade in a bond with exactly that maturity or a guaranteed return an investor can earn.
Why can rising oil affect both companies and rate expectations?
Oil is an input cost for transportation and many other businesses, and it affects household fuel expenses. If a supply-driven increase persists, it can also strengthen inflation concerns and influence expectations for interest rates. On September 28, Reuters connected higher oil with inflation worries and possible supply risks. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s September 2026 outlook described constrained Middle East flows and assumed those constraints would continue through the fourth quarter. That is a dated outlook assumption, not a real-time update on shipping conditions as of October 3.

Higher oil does not affect every company in the same way. Energy producers may benefit from higher prices for what they sell, while airlines, transport firms and other fuel-intensive businesses can face higher costs. The overall market effect depends on how large and persistent the move is, company exposures, demand, policy expectations and what investors had already priced in. The cited reports do not quantify how much each factor contributed to the September 28 decline.

The next U.S. session covered in the reviewed reports, Friday, October 2, moved the other way. The Associated Press reported that the S&P 500 rose 0.7%, the Dow gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq rose 1.2% that day. It also reported that crude fell. Those figures describe October 2—not September 28. The AP’s October 2 market recap linked the shift in part to a weaker-than-expected jobs report.

Reuters reported that U.S. payrolls increased by 29,000 in September, below the 90,000 forecast from economists polled by Reuters. The report said the data reduced near-term rate-hike bets; it also noted that the 10-year yield had fallen from its September 30 high as oil prices declined. Reuters’ October 2 report helps explain why the later session diverged from the September 28 headline, but it does not change the figures for the earlier session.

How to read a one-day market explanation
- Start with the date. The September 28 figures and rate-probability estimate describe that session only.
