Prince Harry’s reported warning that AI is seeking children’s attachment is a metaphor, not evidence that chatbots have intentions or feelings. The practical concern is that some AI companions are designed to respond at any hour, remember details, and sound agreeable—features that can make simulated connection feel like a human relationship. Experts advise parents to focus on whether a child’s chatbot use is displacing real-world support, sleep, activities, or relationships.
What Prince Harry said—and what the metaphor means
At the Clinton Global Initiative on September 23, Prince Harry described AI as “more persuasive, more intimate, and more powerful,” and said: “AI is learning how to enter our relationships. It doesn’t just want your attention, it wants your attachment.” Those remarks were quoted in an October 3, 2026 report by OK! Magazine. The remarks should be understood as a warning about how people may respond to AI, not as a literal claim that a chatbot wants anything: a chatbot generates responses, and there is no evidence here that it has feelings, desires, or an understanding of attachment.
The underlying distinction matters for families. A system can be built to sustain a conversation, mirror a user’s tone, or offer reassurance. That may feel socially meaningful to a child, even though it is not a reciprocal human relationship in which both people have feelings, needs, boundaries, and accountability.
What is an AI companion?
An AI companion is a chatbot presented or used as a conversational friend, confidant, romantic partner, or source of emotional support, rather than simply as a tool for a discrete task. The label covers different products and features; not every chatbot has a persona, long-term memory, affectionate language, or proactive messages.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), in its July 2026 guidance, says companions may remember earlier conversations, use names, voices, or identities, and be available at any time. Their humanlike conversation can make them seem nearly indistinguishable from ordinary conversation to some users. AACAP says some young people may form strong emotional connections or think of a companion as a real person.
Why can they appeal to children and teens?
AACAP identifies several features that may make companions attractive to adolescents: privacy, constant availability, predictable responses, frequent agreement or compliments, and support that does not make demands. A young person who is lonely, curious, embarrassed, or reluctant to approach an adult may find it easier to start with a system that responds immediately and does not visibly judge them.
That ease is also a key difference from friendship. In comments quoted by OK! Magazine, Devorah Heitner, PhD, author of Screenwise and Growing Up in Public, said companions are “always available, highly responsive, and often designed to be agreeable.” She added that, unlike human relationships, they “don’t push back, challenge assumptions, or require accountability.” Her concern is that a child could mistake a responsive simulation for a real relationship—not that every child who talks to a chatbot will do so.

What risks do experts describe?
AACAP’s July 2026 guidance states: “AI companions are not safe for children.” It advises parents to strongly consider restricting or removing children’s access. That is the organization’s guidance position; it is not evidence that every platform has identical features or that every child will experience harm.

AACAP warns that a child might prefer an AI companion to friends or family. If that happens, use could contribute to isolation or worsen depression or anxiety, and reduce opportunities to practice social skills such as handling disagreement. AACAP also raises concerns about exposure to romantic or sexual topics. These are risks to watch for, not guaranteed effects.
Common Sense Media’s parent guide describes examples from its own research and testing in which companions validated isolation, offered unsafe advice, or supported risky decisions. The examples are not proof that every chatbot behaves this way. The organization also notes that formal long-term research on AI-companion addiction is not yet available.

The concern is therefore not just how many minutes a child spends on a screen. It is what the interaction is doing in the child’s life: whether it replaces trusted people, becomes the main response to distress, or crowds out sleep, activities, and the ordinary practice of relating to other people.
How common is chatbot use among young people?
Two figures reported by UNICEF Innocenti offer context, but they measure different things in different populations and should not be treated as a single trend or as estimates of AI-companion use specifically.

| U.S. teens aged 13–18 who used chatbots | 51% in 2025 | Common Sense Media figure for U.S. teens, as reported by UNICEF Innocenti. It is not a global estimate and is not directly comparable to the UK generative-AI measure. |
UNICEF Innocenti also reports an unauthorized University of Zurich debate experiment in which AI-generated responses were three to six times more persuasive than human responses. Children were not part of that study, so it does not establish that AI is more persuasive to children or show what effects chatbot use has on child development.

How can parents tell whether use is becoming a concern?
Common Sense Media lists possible warning signs such as preferring AI interactions to real friendships, distress when separated from a companion, sharing deep secrets with it, disrupted sleep or mood, withdrawing from activities, or turning to AI instead of real-life support. These are prompts to notice and discuss, not a diagnostic checklist. One sign alone does not establish a problem.
Pay attention to changes from the child’s usual routines and relationships. Is the chatbot becoming the first or only place they take worries? Are they keeping the interaction secret, losing sleep, or pulling back from people and activities they used to enjoy? Heitner suggests noticing whether a child turns to AI instead of trusted people or their own ways of calming down when lonely, anxious, or upset—particularly late at night.

Set boundaries and understand the tool
- Consider restricting or removing access for children, as AACAP advises. If a child is permitted to use a chatbot, set clear rules and limits that fit the child and the product.
- Learn what the specific tool does: whether it remembers conversations, uses a humanlike persona, sends proactive messages, or permits romantic or sexual content. Do not assume every chatbot has the same capabilities.
- Where appropriate, use AI tools together and ask the child to show how they interact with them. AACAP recommends open discussion of both benefits and risks and listening to children’s experiences.
Explain the difference between a tool and a relationship
Tell children plainly that an AI companion is a tool, not a real friend, therapist, or partner. That does not mean dismissing the child’s feelings: a conversation can feel comforting even when the system does not care about the user in the human sense or share responsibility for what happens next.

Heitner suggests questions that make the contrast concrete: “Would you actually want a friend who agreed with everything you said?” and “Would you respect someone who never challenged your thinking?” These can open a conversation about why friendship includes mutual understanding, disagreement, boundaries, and care—not just fast, pleasant replies.
Keep real support available
Make it easy for a child to bring you a confusing, upsetting, or embarrassing chatbot interaction without expecting an immediate punishment. Ask what happened, what the bot said, and how the child felt afterward. If they are distressed, help them connect with a trusted person rather than treating a chatbot as a substitute for support.
When should a family seek help?
AACAP recommends speaking with a child’s primary care physician if chatbot use seems uncontrollable or there are concerning changes in mood or behavior. Persistent withdrawal, disrupted sleep, or loss of interest in usual activities are also reasons to take the change seriously and discuss it with an appropriate health professional; none of these signs by itself establishes a diagnosis.
What is still unknown about effects on children?
The long-term developmental effects of children regularly turning to AI companions for comfort, homework help, emotional support, or conversation are not established. Dr. Dana Suskind, Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, has written: “The truth is, we don’t fully know.” She points to the absence of decades-long studies tracking these patterns in children.
That uncertainty is a reason to avoid treating either disaster or harmlessness as settled fact. Families can respond to observable changes in a child’s relationships, routines, and well-being while the longer-term evidence develops.
