On Oct. 3, Iran International reported the open-market dollar at around 2.7 million rials. Those are volatile market quotes, not Iran’s official exchange rate or a guaranteed rate for a transaction.
What is the rial’s exchange rate against the dollar?
The latest reported quotes show a steep fall, but they refer to different dates and should not be read as a same-day comparison.

For Oct. 3, Iran International also reported an open-market euro above 3 million rials, a pound at about 3.52 million, and a dirham above 730,000. The same report put the dollar around 1.1 million rials about a year earlier; that is a reported exchange-rate comparison, not an inflation-adjusted measure of purchasing power.
Why are there different exchange rates in Iran?
Iran has an official Central Bank rate used for state transactions and subsidized essential imports, alongside a free-market rate available to ordinary people and businesses. The free-market rate is significantly weaker. Euronews reported the dollar above 2.1 million rials on that market on Sept. 2, 2026, but the report did not supply a same-day official-rate figure. The reviewed reporting does not establish a contemporaneous official rate for Oct. 3.

As a result, a quoted rial-to-dollar figure needs both its market and date. A free-market quote does not tell a reader what rate a state transaction or subsidized import receives, and an official rate should not be presented as the amount people can generally obtain in the market.
Why is Iran’s currency falling?
The decline reflects several pressures, and the reporting does not establish one uncontested cause. Coverage describes long-running international sanctions, restrictions on oil revenue and access to foreign currency, and a U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports imposed in July 2026. The Associated Press also reported new sanctions imposed since the war began. Euronews described pressure on regional banking channels, trade routes, and oil exports.

Conflict-related costs, high inflation, uncertainty, expectations, and domestic policy decisions also shape the market. Iran’s Central Bank governor, Abdolnaser Hemmati, argued that the movement was driven substantially by psychology rather than underlying economic conditions. Euronews reported his statement: “The dust created in the foreign exchange market will settle, and the recent increase in exchange rates is driven more by psychological factors than by real economic factors.” That is the bank’s explanation, not an independently established consensus.
What the Central Bank said it would do
The Central Bank said it planned to inject $2 billion in banknotes. Iran International reported on Oct. 2 that the announcement had not halted the rial’s slide by that point. That dated observation does not establish the intervention’s longer-term effect.

How does the weaker rial affect prices and businesses?
A weaker rial raises the local-currency cost of imported goods and inputs, including medicines, machinery, and raw materials. Iran International reported September 2026 consumer-price data from the Statistical Center of Iran: prices were 89.8% higher year on year, while average inflation over the preceding 12 months was 73.6%. Those inflation figures describe broad price changes; the exchange rate alone does not explain every price rise or shortage.
Medicine illustrates how currency pressure can interact with supply and payment constraints. The Associated Press reported rising medicine prices and availability problems. Iran produces more than 80% of its medicines domestically, according to official statistics cited by AP, but many products rely on imported raw materials. The head of the government drug-pricing agency said 2,000 types of medicine had their prices “amended” in the preceding six months; this is a medicine-sector figure, not an overall inflation measure.

Reza Majdzadeh, a professor at the University of Essex’s School of Health and Social Care, told AP: “A medicine may be perfectly legal to sell to Iran, but a bank may refuse to process the payment.” His point was that financial sanctions and institutional caution can obstruct payment even when a medicine itself is not directly sanctioned.

The 2026 quotes are part of a longer pattern of sharp devaluation, but older figures refer to earlier market conditions and should not be combined as if they were current rates.
