Elon Musk’s proposed answer to America’s debt problem is artificial intelligence and robotics. In remarks reported from a February 5, 2026 appearance on the Dwarkesh Podcast, he warned that the country would “go bankrupt” without them. His “1,000%” wording is emphatic rhetoric—not a probability calculation, government forecast, or proof that default is inevitable.
What Musk said about America’s debt
Moneywise reported that Musk said: “We are 1,000% going to go bankrupt as a country and fail as a country, without AI and robots.” He also said, “Nothing else will solve the national debt.” Fortune’s account of the conversation, which included Dwarkesh Patel and Stripe cofounder John Collison, added Musk’s qualification: “We just need enough time to build the AI and robots to not go bankrupt before then.”
These quotations are attributed through secondary reporting on the February 5 appearance; the interview recording and an independent transcript were not available for review. Musk’s phrasing is his own prediction, not an official fiscal assessment.
How AI and robotics might help, in Musk’s view
The argument is about productivity: AI systems and robots could make it possible to produce more goods and services with the same or fewer human inputs. If that raised total economic output substantially, the larger economy might be better able to support public spending and the debt burden. Fortune reports that Musk also expects deflation if production grows faster than the money supply.

That is a proposed economic mechanism, not a demonstrated path to resolving federal debt. More output does not automatically mean more government revenue, and the argument depends on gains arriving at sufficient scale and soon enough. It also leaves open how productivity benefits would be distributed and whether tax receipts would rise enough to offset borrowing and interest costs.
Why “going bankrupt” is not a simple description of U.S. debt risk
A government’s finances are not identical to a household’s. Fortune points to the dollar’s reserve-currency role, the federal government’s ability to borrow in its own currency, and the Federal Reserve’s capacity to buy bonds as factors that reduce the risk of outright default. Those protections do not erase fiscal pressures: debt service, deficits, policy choices, and confidence in the government’s finances still matter.

Deflation also complicates Musk’s proposed solution. Falling prices may increase the purchasing power of money, but they can make the real burden of existing nominal debt heavier. So even if AI-driven output pushed prices down, that outcome would not by itself make the debt easier to carry.

Moneywise’s February 9, 2026 article cited U.S. national debt of $38.56 trillion and a fiscal-year-to-date deficit of about $602 billion. Those are figures reported in that dated article, not verified current values. They should not be treated as a live measure of the debt or deficit, or as confirmation of Musk’s prediction.

The available reporting does not establish a definitive forecast that the United States will default, nor does it show that AI and robotics will generate fiscal gains large enough to resolve the debt. The practical takeaway is narrower: Musk argues that major productivity growth could help, while the scale, timing, and effect on federal revenues remain uncertain.
