What does Muse reportedly remember about people?
In a report published October 3, 2026, WIRED says independent AI safety and security researcher Karan Joshi extracted Muse files and instructions through the assistant’s chat interface and shared them with the publication. One instruction reportedly calls for Muse to create “a page for every person in the user’s life” on an hourly process.
WIRED describes Muse’s memory as structured text files. The instructions it reviewed suggest that a page may begin with little information and be built up as context becomes available. The potential scope extends beyond close family and friends to partners, colleagues, collaborators, and people the user follows. These are reported instructions, not an independently verified inventory of what Muse creates or retains for each user.

The apparent aim is practical: an assistant with retained context could remember, for example, why someone who sent an invoice is the plumber a user hired, or what flowers a spouse liked. That example comes from Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts, who told WIRED that useful agents need context about users and the people they interact with. It is the company’s explanation of the feature, not independent confirmation of how any particular memory is formed or used.
Do the instructions tell Muse to avoid making things up?
WIRED says the instructions direct Muse to use available evidence and treat invented details as worse than an empty page. That wording indicates a stated preference for leaving a gap rather than filling it with a guess. It does not establish how reliably the assistant follows that instruction, how often it makes mistakes, or whether the stored information is accurate.

That distinction matters because relationship context can be sensitive even when it seems mundane. An inference about a person’s role, history, or connection to the user could shape later reminders or suggestions. The report does not quantify errors or show that every possible data source is connected for every user.
Why are privacy experts concerned?
The concern is not only what a user deliberately tells an assistant. A system that can draw on conversations or connected services may also accumulate information about other people, and may infer details that are right or wrong. A useful memory aid can therefore become a record about people who did not directly provide information to the assistant.

Carissa Véliz, an associate professor at Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI, told WIRED that people give AI systems much more information about themselves than they receive in return. She highlighted the additional information systems can infer or piece together from other data sources, whether those inferences are correct or not.
Miranda Bogen, director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s AI Governance Lab, warned that assistants encourage users to connect broad areas of their lives—including email, calendars, and financial institutions—in the name of helpfulness. Her concern is that this breadth can substantially expand what companies know about users. Joshi, whose review prompted the reporting, told WIRED that the instructions appeared designed to understand users’ real-life relationships, describing the prospect as “honestly pretty creepy.”

What safeguards does Meta say Muse has?
WIRED reports that Meta describes a dedicated virtual machine for each user that other agents cannot access. The company also says users can wipe memories and disconnect external services; that Muse seeks confirmation before some actions, such as sending email or making a purchase; and that it maintains an audit log of activity and planned actions.
These are Meta’s descriptions of its safeguards as reported by WIRED. The article’s reporting does not independently test whether the controls work as described or explain every detail of how memory deletion, service disconnection, or the audit log operates.

What should users take away from the report?
WIRED’s account points to a tension: persistent relationship memory might help an assistant remember useful context, but it also raises questions about what is stored about third parties, what the system infers, and how users can review or remove it. The report does not establish a complete account of Muse’s production behavior, nor does it provide an exact download count. It says only that Muse has had millions of downloads.
If evaluating any assistant with connected accounts, focus on the practical controls: which data sources are connected, whether person-level memories can be inspected or edited, how deletion works, and what actions require confirmation or appear in an activity log. WIRED’s report provides limited detail about those questions for Muse, so it does not support a product ranking or a conclusion that every user’s relationships are profiled in the same way.
