Blue Bird’s shares may look inexpensive at a glance, but the apparent bargain depends on earnings that include a large, one-time acquisition-accounting gain. The company also raised its fiscal 2026 outlook and reported strong adjusted EBITDA, while bookings at its legacy business softened and execution risks remain. The evidence supports a conditional valuation case—not a clear-cut bargain verdict.
What Blue Bird’s latest results show
Blue Bird Corporation (NASDAQ: BLBD), which makes school buses and related parts, reported fiscal third-quarter 2026 results for the quarter ended June 27, 2026. Its August 5 release showed $517.2 million in revenue, up 29.9% year over year, and 3,525 buses sold. Micro Bird, whose remaining 50% Blue Bird acquired effective April 1, contributed $122.9 million of quarterly revenue. The company’s Form 10-Q and earnings release provide the underlying figures.
Why GAAP earnings are not a normal run rate
Quarterly GAAP net income was $185.3 million, or diluted EPS of $5.27. That number includes a $160.5 million gain from remeasuring Blue Bird’s previously held Micro Bird investment at fair value when it bought the remaining stake. The company says this gain is not indicative of normal earnings activity. It should not be annualized or treated as recurring operating profit.
Adjusted net income was $45.0 million, with adjusted diluted EPS of $1.28. These company-defined non-GAAP figures help separate the remeasurement gain from the quarter’s operating picture, but adjustments do not make every excluded cost economically irrelevant. Acquisition costs and a pension settlement loss also affected other income and expense.

Adjusted EBITDA was strong, with an acquisition-related boost
Blue Bird reported Q3 adjusted EBITDA of $71.4 million, 13.8% of sales, compared with $58.5 million and a 14.7% margin in the year-earlier quarter. Micro Bird contributed $16.5 million. The company said adjusted EBITDA at legacy Blue Bird declined $3.6 million year over year. The consolidated increase therefore reflects both operating performance and the larger business following the acquisition; it is not a like-for-like measure of legacy growth.
What the pullback valuation does—and does not—say
At the October 2, 2026 close, Stock Analysis reported BLBD at $56.53 per share, with a $1.79 billion market capitalization, a trailing P/E of 6.66, and a forward P/E of 12.90. These are dated secondary-source figures, not a live quote or independently verified valuation; share prices and provider calculations can change. The snapshot is available from Stock Analysis.
The trailing P/E is especially easy to misread because trailing net income includes the $160.5 million Micro Bird remeasurement gain. A low trailing multiple built on earnings lifted by that accounting event is not proof that the recurring business is cheap. The forward P/E avoids that specific trailing-period distortion, but it relies on outside earnings estimates and does not establish whether those estimates will be achieved.
A more useful bargain test compares price with sustainable earnings and cash generation. Investors would need to assess normalized earnings, enterprise value, debt, working capital, free cash flow, and acquisition funding—not just the share price or P/E. The reported figures summarized here do not establish those cash-flow and balance-sheet measures, so they are not enough to calculate a cash-flow multiple or declare the shares undervalued.

Is the operating outlook strong enough to support the valuation?
Management raised fiscal 2026 guidance
On August 5, Blue Bird raised its FY2026 outlook to approximately $1.75 billion in net revenue and approximately $247 million in adjusted EBITDA. These are management projections, not achieved results or guarantees. The company also described a 2030-or-later outlook of at least $3.3 billion in revenue and $500 million or more in adjusted EBITDA, at a margin of 15% or greater. That long-range outlook incorporates Micro Bird and an expanded Ford collaboration; it should be judged against results as they are delivered, rather than treated as current earnings power.
Legacy demand and pricing are moving in different directions
Legacy Blue Bird bookings in Q3 were 2,290 units versus 2,467 in the year-earlier quarter, a 7.2% decline. Nine-month legacy bookings were 6,573 versus 6,892, down 4.6%. The company reported a 6.7% rise in average selling price per unit for Q3 and a 5.7% rise over the first nine months. In the quarter, legacy bus sales fell $3.5 million, or 0.9%, as higher prices partly offset fewer units.

Those figures point to a mixed demand picture: pricing has supported revenue, but the lower booking counts are a reason not to read consolidated growth as evidence of accelerating legacy demand. Consolidated results also include Micro Bird, so investors should distinguish acquired contribution from performance in the established business.
Costs, tariffs, and delivery timing matter
Blue Bird’s filing attributes higher per-unit manufacturing costs to raw-material inflation, tariffs that began affecting results in the second half of FY2025, and supply-chain disruption that raised component costs. The company said pricing actions more than offset these factors in legacy cost of goods sold as a share of sales in Q3. That reported offset is encouraging, but it does not ensure that future price increases will keep pace with changing tariffs, input costs, wages, or supply conditions.

The company also said it built a large number of units for certain customers that it expected to deliver in fiscal Q4 to align with school resumption. This production timing contributed to a significant increase in finished-goods inventory at June 27. The explanation describes why inventory rose; it does not prove every unit will convert to revenue and cash on schedule.

- Underlying earnings: Track GAAP results alongside adjusted measures, and separate acquisition-accounting effects from recurring operations.
- Legacy versus acquired growth: Compare Blue Bird’s legacy bookings and margins with consolidated results that include Micro Bird.
- Guidance delivery: Measure reported FY2026 revenue and adjusted EBITDA against management’s raised targets, while treating the longer-term outlook as a forecast.
- Cost resilience: Watch whether pricing continues to offset tariffs, component costs, and other manufacturing pressures.
- Cash and balance sheet: Review current SEC statements for free cash flow, debt, working capital, and acquisition funding before using earnings multiples to infer value.
- Inventory conversion and integration: Look for evidence that the Q4 delivery schedule converts elevated finished goods into sales and cash, and assess how the Micro Bird acquisition performs over time.
Blue Bird’s CEO John Wyskiel said in the August 5, 2026 release that the team continued to exceed expectations while navigating tariffs and expanding its position in alternative-powered buses. That is management’s characterization, not an independent assessment of future results.
