NMC had also cancelled classes and closed those campuses on October 1–2. Its Rota campus remained open during the earlier closure period. The available official information does not confirm a Choi-Wan-related closure for CNMI public K–12 schools.
Which campuses are closed?
NMC’s October 1 notice cancelled afternoon and evening classes beginning at noon that day and all-day classes on Friday, October 2. Saipan and Tinian offices closed for those periods; the college said its Rota campus remained open. NMC’s later notice said the Saipan and Tinian campuses would remain closed Saturday, October 3, during safety assessments and cleanup. The college also reported that its Testing Center was closed and the October 3 SAT was cancelled. Northern Marianas College is the source for these institution-specific updates.
Are CNMI public schools closed?
A college closure does not establish a public-school closure. The official CNMI Public School System pages surfaced in the available information did not confirm whether K–12 schools closed because of Choi-Wan. Families should check the CNMI Public School System directly for any school-specific announcement rather than assume the NMC notice applies to them.
What were the storm alerts as of October 3?
In its October 3 statement, the National Weather Service Tiyan, Guam, reported that Choi-Wan was moving northeast and away from Agrihan. At the time the statement was issued, a typhoon warning remained for Alamagan, Agrihan, and Pagan; tropical-storm warnings remained for Saipan and Tinian; and a flood watch remained for Guam and the Northern Marianas. These are alert levels at the statement’s issuance, not a live status report. Check the National Weather Service Guam for current advisories, since warnings and watches can change.

What hazards did forecasters warn about?
The NWS Tiyan October 1 local statement described forecast hazards, not confirmed damage or measured storm impacts. It said damaging winds could persist as the storm moved near the northern islands and warned of heavy rain, flooding, hazardous surf, coastal inundation, and erosion. The statement defined a tropical-storm warning this way: “A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within 24 hours.” It also advised: “Shelter in place until the all-clear is given.” Follow the latest official instructions for your location.
- Saipan and Tinian: NWS forecast 35–45 mph winds, with gusts up to 60 mph, overnight and potentially through at least Sunday. It forecast 7–10 feet of surf along south-facing reefs and 9–12 feet along west-facing reefs, plus possible coastal inundation of 1–2 feet and significant coastal erosion.
- Rain near Saipan and Tinian: NWS forecast 4–8 inches by early Monday, with locally higher totals possible.
- Northern islands: NWS forecast 10–16 inches of rain, with up to 20 inches possible near the storm’s center.
These figures were forecasts in the NWS Tiyan October 1, 2026 statement. They should not be read as observed rainfall, wind measurements, or proof that flooding or damage occurred.

What should NMC staff and students do?
For its employees, NMC advised securing loose outdoor items, unplugging nonessential electronics, backing up files, moving equipment and documents away from windows, covering electronics with waterproof material, and raising sensitive items off the floor where flooding might occur. These were preventive instructions from the college, not a report that damage or flooding had taken place.
