The Motley Fool reported on October 3, 2026, that Robinhood’s CEO said on CNBC on September 21 that sports contracts could become a minority of Robinhood’s prediction-market activity within a few years, with crypto-related contracts helping drive growth. For crypto investors, that points to a possible shift in where trading activity and Robinhood revenue come from; it does not establish a price outlook for crypto or make an event contract equivalent to owning a coin.
What did Vlad Tenev forecast?
As reported by The Motley Fool on October 3, 2026, Tenev expects sports contracts to account for less than half of Robinhood’s prediction-market activity within a few years, as crypto-related contracts gain traction. The report says crypto contracts already make up a disproportionately large share of Robinhood’s prediction-market activity. The precise CNBC wording and a verified denominator for that share are not established here, so the forecast is best understood as a directional view about category mix, not a quantified company target.
Prediction markets let customers trade contracts tied to the outcome of an event. In crypto-related examples, a contract might ask whether Bitcoin finishes above a specified price during a short window. That is a question about an event’s outcome: buying such a contract does not itself transfer ownership of Bitcoin or give the holder the same exposure as holding the asset.
Does the forecast mean crypto prices or spot trading will rise?
No. It concerns the relative popularity of crypto-themed event contracts inside prediction markets. It does not say that Bitcoin or other crypto prices will rise, or that spot trading volume—the amount of the underlying crypto bought and sold—will increase. Demand for a short-duration contract can reflect interest in a particular question or time window, rather than a decision to buy and hold the referenced asset.

That distinction matters for investors in Robinhood, too. More event-contract activity could support the company’s transaction business if it persists, but the forecast alone does not establish durable growth, a direct effect on crypto prices, or attractive returns from buying contracts.
What do Robinhood’s latest reported figures show?
Robinhood Markets’ second-quarter 2026 results, released July 29 for the quarter ended June 30, show strong event-contract activity alongside weaker cryptocurrency revenue. The measures below describe different parts of the company’s business; revenue, contract count, and notional volume are not interchangeable.

These figures are from Robinhood’s company-wide Q2 release. A count of event contracts cannot be compared directly with dollars of crypto notional volume: one is a number of contracts, while the other is the stated dollar value of crypto trading. Revenue also is not trading volume. The combination shows that prediction markets were a fast-growing source of Robinhood revenue during that quarter, even as its reported cryptocurrency revenue declined; it does not reveal what happened to crypto prices or what customers earned.
Are crypto contracts gaining ground on other prediction-market platforms?
The Motley Fool, citing Kalshi data, reported that Kalshi crypto prediction-market volume rose from $337 million in January 2026 to about $7.5 billion in August 2026. For the week ending September 20, it reported this category mix:

This is evidence of growth and a changing category mix on Kalshi, not a breakdown of Robinhood’s business. It also describes different things across the two periods: crypto-category volume growth from January through August, and category shares for one week. Bundled multi-outcome contracts are a separate reported category, so the table should not be read as a simple head-to-head comparison of sports and Bitcoin contracts. These Kalshi figures and Robinhood’s quarterly total of 13.6 billion contracts use different platforms, periods, and measures.
What could the shift mean for Robinhood investors?
If crypto-related event contracts continue to attract activity, they could become a more important part of Robinhood’s transaction business. Robinhood reported 28.4 million funded customers as of June 30, 2026, and its CFO, Shiv Verma, said in the July 29 Q2 release that the company had set records and reached new highs in equity, options, and event-contract volumes while continuing to win market share. Those company-wide figures provide context for the business, but they do not show how many customers trade crypto event contracts or whether the reported pace will continue.

- For a Robinhood shareholder: prediction markets may be a growing source of activity and revenue, but the Q2 figures are a snapshot from one quarter, not a guarantee of future results.
- For a crypto holder: growth in event contracts is not evidence that the referenced coins will appreciate or that spot-market demand is increasing.
- For a contract buyer: an event contract is a position on the outcome defined by its terms, not a substitute for owning the underlying cryptocurrency.
Which exchanges and regulatory questions matter?
Robinhood’s Q2 release describes Rothera as a CFTC-licensed exchange and clearinghouse operated through a Robinhood–Susquehanna joint venture. It said Rothera had processed more than 3.5 billion contracts by the release date. Axios reported on September 8, 2026, that Robinhood had agreed to route some event contracts through OG.com’s exchange and clearinghouse under a multi-year arrangement, while continuing to use Kalshi, ForecastEX, and Rothera.
The venue landscape matters because exchanges and clearinghouses support how contracts are listed, traded, and settled. But the number of venues or contracts processed does not by itself establish customer demand, profitability, or the outlook for crypto assets.

Axios described the regulatory question as unresolved at the time of its September 8 report: whether particular event contracts fall under federal derivatives regulation or state gaming oversight. It also noted a possible Supreme Court case. That is a dated description of the legal posture, not a conclusion about the law as of October 3, 2026; regulatory treatment may depend on the product and jurisdiction.
