Oil prices fell on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, but the weekly picture differed by benchmark: U.S. crude futures (WTI) lost 1.6% for the week, while international benchmark Brent edged up 0.11%. The G7 announced a coordinated release of 100 million barrels through the International Energy Agency over four months, including an early diesel release. The move comes as oil flows recover only partially, with major Gulf supply disruptions and tight refined-product markets still in view.
What happened to oil prices on Oct. 2?
At Friday’s settlement, Brent was $102.25 per barrel, down 6 cents, or 0.06%, on the day. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the U.S. benchmark, settled at $91.11 per barrel, down $1.76, or 1.90%. Those are daily declines; they do not mean both benchmarks fell over the full week.
| Benchmark | Oct. 2 settlement | Change on the day | Change for the week | Benchmark market |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brent | $102.25 per barrel | Down 6 cents (0.06%) | Up 0.11% | International seaborne crude |
| WTI | $91.11 per barrel | Down $1.76 (1.90%) | Down 1.6% | U.S. crude |
All prices and returns are from Reuters’ Oct. 2, 2026, close report; the weekly figures compare that week’s close with the prior week’s close. So “weekly loss” describes WTI, not Brent. The Friday declines and the weekly returns are separate measures, and the G7 announcement coincided with the market move; the available figures do not establish that the announcement alone caused it. What did the G7 announce?
In an Oct. 2 statement, G7 leaders said members would implement a coordinated release of 100 million barrels through the IEA, beginning immediately and spread over four months. The plan calls for a substantial volume of diesel to be frontloaded within the first 20 days by G7 members and partners. The leaders also committed to refrain from energy and energy-product export restrictions among G7 members. G7 leaders’ statement

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The statement says the commitment takes into account commitments already fulfilled. It should therefore not be read as proof that all 100 million barrels are newly added to an earlier pledge. The Associated Press reported that IEA members announced a 426-million-barrel release in March, while the relationship between that action and the October commitment was unclear. Associated Press
Why does the release matter if supply is recovering?
Recovery has not restored normal flows
The IEA’s Sept. 11, 2026, Oil Market Report said global oil production fell by 1.6 million barrels per day month over month to 100.1 million barrels per day in August. More than 10 million barrels per day of Gulf output remained shut in. The agency projected global supply at 100.7 million barrels per day in 2026, 5.7 million barrels per day below 2025, before an 8-million-barrel-per-day rebound in 2027. It deferred expected full recovery in Middle East producer supply until 2027. IEA, Oil Market Report, Sept. 11, 2026

Emergency stocks help bridge a gap; they are not new production
A stock release can add barrels to the market while production or transport routes are disrupted, but it draws on stored supply rather than increasing ongoing output. In Sept. 18 commentary, IEA oil-market division head Toril Bosoni said prices had eased after April as emergency stocks were released, bypass routes raised Middle East exports, producers outside the region increased output, Persian Gulf flows partly recovered and demand softened. Despite those offsets, the IEA estimated a third-quarter market deficit of 1.7 million barrels per day.
Hormuz flows averaged 7.6 million barrels per day in August, 13.1 million barrels per day below pre-war levels, according to the same IEA commentary. Bosoni warned that if Gulf supplies stayed constrained and commercial inventories kept falling rapidly, higher prices and further demand reductions might be needed to close the supply-demand gap. Why can diesel remain tight when crude flows improve?
Crude oil and refined products such as diesel are related markets, but they are not interchangeable at the point of use: refineries must process crude into fuels, and reduced refining capacity or output can limit product supplies even when more crude is moving. Reuters quoted Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, saying the main stress had shifted from crude availability toward refined-product supply, constrained by reduced refinery capacity and output across the Middle East and Russia. Reuters also reported that Chinese refiners suspended oil-product exports for October to preserve domestic stocks. That context helps explain the G7’s emphasis on getting substantial diesel volumes out early, rather than treating all released barrels as equivalent. Reuters
