Jimmie Johnson says Legacy Motor Club does not have an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). He described the team’s approach as building its own aerodynamic and chassis engineering capability by hiring specialists. That statement is about Legacy’s relationship with JGR as a team—not its separate partnership with Toyota, which began with the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season.
What did Jimmie Johnson say about JGR?
In a report published October 1, 2026, Yahoo Sports/MotorBiscuit attributed this statement to Johnson, speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio: “We don’t have an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing, and we’ve really been trying to build a partnership with them and do that by hiring the right people and having the right aero engineering group, the chassis engineering group, all these different layers.” The report said SiriusXM NASCAR Radio posted the interview on X; the quotation is reproduced here through that secondary report.
Johnson’s wording pairs the lack of a JGR alliance with a plan to build Legacy’s internal engineering organization. He did not say that Legacy had never cooperated with JGR, or that every form of technical cooperation had ended.
How does the statement fit with reports of earlier JGR work?
Sports Business Journal reported on June 1, 2026, that Legacy was working with JGR on aerodynamic research and development while Johnson sought long-term independence from the Toyota flagship team. The October statement and the June report describe different points in time and use different terms: one refers to aerodynamic R&D, the other to an alliance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The available reporting does not specify what the R&D covered, whether it was a formal or informal arrangement, or when it ended. It therefore supports a careful distinction—not the claim that Legacy had no prior JGR cooperation, nor the claim that the June work was itself an alliance.
Legacy’s Toyota partnership is separate
Toyota announced in May 2023 that its partnership with Legacy would begin with the 2024 Cup Series season. The manufacturer’s announcement also identified JGR and 23XI Racing as existing Toyota Cup Series team partners. A team’s relationship with its manufacturer is distinct from an alliance with another team that uses the same manufacturer.

So Johnson’s statement does not mean Legacy is leaving Toyota or ending its manufacturer partnership. It concerns Legacy’s alliance status with JGR.
What is Legacy building toward?
More in-house engineering capacity
Johnson said Legacy was hiring to develop its own aero and chassis engineering groups. That signals an effort to strengthen internal capability, but the cited reporting gives no measure of how independent the team has become or whether the hiring has improved on-track performance.

A third Cup car in 2027
NASCAR reported in March 2026 that Johnson confirmed Legacy planned to add a third full-time Cup car for the 2027 season, saying another car could accelerate the team’s development. The October 1 report identified the then-planned lineup as Josh Berry in the No. 42, Erik Jones continuing in the No. 43, and Riley Herbst in the No. 84. Those driver assignments are time-sensitive plans reported on that date.
Business strategy tied to performance
In an August 2026 RACER feature, Legacy was described as developing a strategic ownership group that included athletes, celebrities, and other investors. Team president Michael Guttilla said the team asks whether an initiative “help[s] us go faster.” The feature framed fan experience and business connections as ways to attract resources for performance; it did not establish a specific competitive result from those efforts.

What Johnson said about Legacy’s progress
In the October report, Johnson said: “When you watch the big teams like Hendrick, Gibbs, Penske, everybody finds a challenging spot in the year and we have as well, but we are building.” He expected Legacy to take another step in 2027 and considered wins an appropriate expectation for that season, while saying the team could still win a race in 2026. These are Johnson’s reported expectations, not a guarantee of results.
