In national trauma data, recorded e-scooter admissions rose 92% from 2021 to 2023. In a separate study of injured people age 18 and younger, patients under 16 were more likely to have a major injury than those older than 16. Neither result measures the risk of injury per scooter ride.
What the two analyses found
The headline combines two studies with different data, populations and outcomes. One counted e-scooter trauma admissions in a national trauma database; the other examined injury severity among injured patients age 18 and younger using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Their findings are related, but the figures are not directly comparable.

The American College of Surgeons reported both analyses in 2026. The national study’s abstract is titled “National Trauma Burden of Electric Scooter Injuries Since Standardized ICD-10 Coding”; the pediatric analysis is titled “Severity of Electric Scooter Injury Is Disproportionately Associated with Younger Age.” The release says the abstracts were selected for presentation at ACS Clinical Congress 2026, but had not yet been peer reviewed.
Are e-scooter injuries increasing?
Recorded admissions in the national trauma database increased substantially: from 2,311 in 2021 to 4,430 in 2023. Their share of all trauma admissions in the database also rose, from 0.19% to 0.34%. That supports saying e-scooter trauma admissions became more common in this dataset during that period.

It does not establish that an individual ride or rider became 92% more likely to result in injury. The analysis counts admissions and reports their share among all trauma admissions; it does not adjust for how many people rode, how often they rode, or the distance traveled. The American College of Surgeons describes the national analysis and its findings in its 2026 release.
Were younger injured riders more likely to have major injuries?
In the separate NEISS analysis of injured patients age 18 and younger, 65.6% of patients under 16 sustained major injuries, compared with 53.7% of those older than 16. The comparison is between age groups within the study’s injured sample. It does not tell parents the chance that any child who rides will be injured or sustain a major injury.

The age pattern appeared despite lower reported average speed among younger patients: 17.6 mph, compared with 20.3 mph among older patients. After adjustment, older age was associated with three times the odds of a minor injury and 58% lower odds of a major injury. These are associations reported in the release; they do not establish why severity differed or show that speed alone explains the difference.
What the trauma-admission study says about severity and helmets
Among the 10,151 admissions in the national trauma analysis, 16.2% required ICU admission and 11.3% involved an operation. The release characterized 85% of injuries as minor or moderate. These figures describe this trauma-admission sample, not the outcomes of every e-scooter crash.

Helmet use was documented in 12.1% of admissions. The release says documented helmet use and obesity were associated with lower adjusted odds of ICU admission, but gives no effect estimate. This observational finding is not proof that helmets caused a reduction in ICU admissions, and it does not evaluate a particular helmet or establish product-specific effectiveness.

- Keep the studies separate. The national analysis counts trauma admissions across 2021–2023; the NEISS analysis compares severity among injured young patients.
- Do not read the admission increase as a risk rate. No exposure-adjusted measure, such as injuries per ride or per rider, is reported in the ACS release.
- Do not generalize the pediatric percentages to all young riders. They describe the age distribution of injury severity among patients captured in that analysis.
- Recognize what remains unknown. The release does not reproduce full methods, confidence intervals or detailed study limitations. The abstracts had been selected for a conference but were not yet peer reviewed, according to the release.
Senior author Quyen D. Chu, MD, MBA, FACS, of Howard University Hospital, said in the ACS-attributed release: “It’s important to recognize that e-scooters are not innocuous vehicles; there is danger to them,”

Senior author Cornelia L. Griggs, MD, MPH, FACS, of Mass General Brigham for Children, said in the same release: “An e-scooter is not a toy. We know they’re convenient and many families enjoy them, but a child can get hurt far worse on one than on a regular bike.”

Practical safety steps for families
- Use a properly fitted helmet; the trauma analysis documented helmet use in only a small share of admissions, though its reported association with ICU odds does not prove causation.
- Check the age, speed and helmet rules where the scooter will be used. The ACS release says these requirements vary by state and locality, so confirm current rules with the relevant local authority.
- Do not assume that a lower reported speed makes a younger rider’s injury risk negligible. In the pediatric analysis, younger injured patients had lower reported average speeds but a higher share of major injuries.
