Choose the right reset for your goal
“Factory reset” can mean either restoring Dell’s shipped software image or reinstalling Windows. Choose based on whether Windows starts, whether SupportAssist is available on your model, and whether you are troubleshooting or handing the computer to someone else.

SupportAssist OS Recovery is available only on certain Dell computers. Dell recommends it for supported systems; computers with Qualcomm processors are not supported by SupportAssist OS Recovery, so Dell advises trying Windows Push-Button Reset first. Prepare before resetting
- Back up your files. Copy documents, photos, desktop files, and anything else you need to a separate location. Dell recommends backing up before resetting; its Windows 11 guidance references OneDrive, and the SupportAssist factory-reset workflow offers a backup step. A reset is not a backup operation. - Record what you will need to reinstall. A SupportAssist factory reset removes software and drivers installed by the user. Licensed software may require its product or license key afterward.
- Connect power. Dell requires the computer to be connected to power for the SupportAssist factory reset.
- Know which data the selected option removes. “Keep my files” preserves personal files but removes installed applications and drivers; “Remove everything” removes personal files too. The SupportAssist factory reset deletes hard-drive data.
- Check model eligibility. Confirm SupportAssist OS Recovery availability and any recovery-media requirements for your specific Dell model. (Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery overview)
If Windows still starts: use Reset this PC
For a Windows reinstall without restoring Dell’s original factory image, use Windows Settings. Dell’s documented Windows 11 route uses these steps; labels may vary by Windows version.

- Open Start, type Reset this PC, and open the matching System Settings result.
- Select Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything according to whether you want personal files retained.
- If you are preparing the computer for another owner or recycling it, choose Remove files and clean the drive when that option is offered in the documented Windows 11 workflow. This is the more thorough drive-cleaning choice in that workflow, not a guarantee about every data-recovery scenario.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and wait for Windows to complete the reset.
With Keep my files, copy anything especially important elsewhere before you begin, and make a list of programs you will need to reinstall: this option keeps personal files, not installed apps, drivers, or settings. If Windows will not boot: check Dell recovery options
On supported computers, SupportAssist OS Recovery may start automatically after repeated failed boot attempts. It can diagnose hardware problems, back up files, repair the system, or restore factory defaults. Availability is limited to certain Dell systems shipped with factory-installed Windows 10 or Windows 11, so check eligibility for your exact product. (Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery overview)

- If SupportAssist OS Recovery appears, use its recovery options to diagnose or repair the computer, or proceed to a reset if restoring it is your goal.
- If it does not appear, or your model does not support it, try Windows Push-Button Reset if available. Dell’s high-level instructions are to open Start, search for Reset this PC, open the System Settings result, select Reset PC, choose a file option, then follow the prompts. - If built-in recovery and Windows reset cannot restore the operating system, use Dell OS Recovery Tool to create USB recovery media. A USB flash drive is needed for this fallback, but not for every reset. Follow the tool’s requirements for your model rather than assuming a drive capacity. (Dell OS Recovery Tool instructions)
Dell says SupportAssist OS Recovery does not support Qualcomm-processor systems; for those computers, try Windows Push-Button Reset first. If Windows 10 is installed, note that Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; check current OS and support information for the device before choosing a reinstall route. Restore Dell’s factory-shipped software with SupportAssist
Use this route when you specifically want the Dell factory state and the computer supports SupportAssist OS Recovery. The factory reset deletes system data and personal files, and uninstalls programs and drivers you installed.

- Back up files you want to keep, then connect the computer to power.
- In SupportAssist OS Recovery, select Start Reset from the Reset tile.
- Select Reset to factory settings, then continue through the prompts.
- Use the offered file-backup step if needed. Before the reset proceeds, acknowledge that it deletes system data and personal files.
- After the reset, restart the computer, restore backed-up files, and reinstall applications that were not included with the factory software.
SupportAssist may also show Reset and update, which installs the latest operating system along with critical drivers and applications. The available choices can vary; Dell says if the computer is irreparable or the factory operating system cannot be detected, only “Reset and update” may be displayed.
