Target announced price cuts on nearly 2,000 home and apparel/accessories items on September 29, 2026, as holiday shopping got underway. The move signals a renewed push on value, but it does not yet show that Target has won back shoppers or gained market share: the company’s latest reported sales and traffic figures cover a quarter that ended before the cuts.
What Target cut prices on
Target says the new reductions span nearly 2,000 items and build on more than 10,000 price reductions over the prior year. The examples below are prices and year-over-year comparisons announced by Target, not an independently audited comparison with other retailers. Prices, promotions and availability may vary by location and on Target.com; the program excludes Alaska and Hawaii. Target’s September 29 announcement lists these examples:
| Product | Target’s announced price comparison |
|---|---|
| Women’s long-sleeve tees | $12, down from $15 |
| Women’s shoes | $35 average, compared with $40 the prior year |
| Kids’ rain and winter boots | Average prices approximately 15% lower than the prior year |
| Bedding | Average prices 15% lower than the prior year |
| Threshold queen comforters | $69, down from $89 |
| Room Essentials queen comforters | $40, down from $50 |
| Threshold performance queen sheets | $50, down from $55 |
The figures establish what Target says it is charging or how its prices compare with the previous year. They do not establish that Target is cheaper than Walmart, Amazon or any other competitor. That would require current, category-matched comparisons of actual shelf or checkout prices, including any promotional conditions.
Why Target says it is making the move
Target executive vice president and chief merchandising officer Cara Sylvester said, “Guests are looking for great products at an incredible value, and that’s an important part of what we aim to deliver every day.” She described the price reductions as a way to help families find style, design and value for holiday moments. That is management’s stated rationale, not evidence that the cuts have already increased visits, sales or market share. Target’s announcement

The value push fits the consumer backdrop Target described in its fiscal 2025 annual report: shoppers were cautious, value-focused and selective about discretionary purchases amid tariff volatility. Price is not the only part of Target’s offer, however. The company also reported that two-thirds of its digital sales were fulfilled through same-day options, making convenience another part of its broader proposition. Target’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K
Did Target’s holiday price cuts win back shoppers?
There is no post-announcement result in the figures available here to answer that yet. Target’s second-quarter 2026 results, reported August 19, cover a quarter that ended August 1—nearly two months before the September 29 announcement. In that earlier quarter, comparable sales grew 3.8% and comparable traffic grew 3.6%. Those numbers describe prior momentum, not an effect of the holiday price reductions. The longer-term comparison helps explain why restoring visits and spending matters to the retailer. In fiscal 2025, comparable sales fell 2.6%; transactions declined 2.2% and average transaction amount declined 0.4%, according to Target’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Those historical figures show the direction of the prior-year pressure, but do not identify what caused it or establish that price cuts will reverse it. Target’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K
Why earnings need a separate read
Target’s Q2 results included a $994 million tariff refund received during the quarter and recognized as a reduction of cost of sales. The company said the refund contributed $1.65 per share to Q2 earnings per share. That is a distinct financial factor: reported EPS growth should not be treated as purely operating improvement, and it cannot be attributed to September’s price cuts, which had not yet been announced. What to watch as holiday results arrive
A price announcement is an input to strategy; market-share gains and stronger customer demand are outcomes that need to be measured. To judge whether this effort is working, watch for results after the cuts took effect and separate indicators that can move for different reasons:
- Traffic and transactions: More visits or transactions would indicate that more shoppers are coming to Target, but would not alone show that they are spending more per trip.
- Comparable sales and average transaction amount: These help show whether sales are improving and whether higher visit counts are translating into a larger average purchase.
- Category performance and units: Results in the affected home and apparel/accessories categories can help distinguish demand for the discounted items from broader company trends.
- Gross margin and earnings: Lower prices may affect profitability, so sales growth should be considered alongside margin performance and one-time financial items such as the Q2 tariff refund.
- Market share: A direct share measure is needed to substantiate a claim that Target gained share; sales growth alone does not prove that competitors lost business.
Any comparison with another retailer should use the same categories and dates, compare actual prices rather than headline discounts, and account for location, online availability and eligibility requirements. Changes in assortment, convenience, seasonality and consumer conditions can coincide with price moves, so they also matter when interpreting a later result.
