What Happened to Arcades? From Pong to the Barcade Revival

Arcades did not disappear in a single crash. They became a defining place to play games in public, then lost ground as the market filled with machines and home consoles improved. Arcade play survived by moving into family entertainment centers, museums, vintage arcades and bars. Barcades are one visible part of that story—not evidence, by themselves, of a measured nationwide boom.

What happened to arcades?

For much of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, arcades and arcade machines in places such as shopping centers and pubs offered a common way to play video games. As the machines faced competition from better home consoles and an oversaturated market, traditional arcades declined. The games and the impulse to play them in person did not vanish; they continued in other kinds of venues.

That history was never a simple progression from public arcades to private living rooms. Home gaming was already part of the story in the 1970s, while arcades remained important public gaming spaces for decades. The U.S. Census Bureau describes local arcades as an important introduction to games before home consoles were commonplace in most American homes. (U.S. Census Bureau)

How Pong brought coin-op games into the spotlight

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell conceived a video version of ping-pong in 1972 and assigned engineer Allan Alcorn to build it, according to the Strong National Museum of Play. The prototype was installed at Andy Capp’s Tavern in Sunnyvale, California, where it drew enough players to fill its coin box. The Strong describes Pong as a game that “launched the video game industry.” That is the museum’s characterization of Pong’s influence, not a claim that it was the first electronic game.

Magnavox Odyssey already had a similar tennis game. Atari’s arcade breakthrough and the Odyssey’s earlier work intersected in a patent dispute: Atari settled with Magnavox. The home market was part of Pong’s story from early on, too. Atari’s home version was distributed through Sears in 1975, according to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Why arcades became a familiar place to play

Arcades made games available as a shared public activity: players could gather around a cabinet, take turns and compete. The National Videogame Museum points to Pong and the 1978 hit Space Invaders as pivotal successes. Space Invaders’ gameplay, graphics and accelerating soundtrack helped shape what arcade games could do and how they could hold players’ attention. The museum’s question, “Can you imagine a time when you had to leave the house and go out, in order to play videogames?” captures the appeal of that era, though home games already existed. Why traditional arcades declined

There was no single closing date or universally decisive cause. The Strong identifies several pressures: an oversaturated arcade-game market, improved home consoles and renewed social anxieties linking arcades with juvenile delinquency. Together, these factors help explain why dedicated video arcades lost ground by the end of the twentieth century. The available account does not rank the causes, and the 1983 home-console crash alone does not explain the full decline. (The Strong National Museum of Play)

Where arcade play went next

Arcade games continued in venues with different purposes and audiences. Family entertainment centers such as Dave & Buster’s and Chuck E. Cheese combine games with broader outings; vintage arcades and museum exhibits preserve or present older machines; and theme bars such as Barcade and Ground Kontrol bring classic games into adult social settings. The last category is often called the barcade format.

These settings show how arcade play adapted, not that every old-style arcade survived or that barcades grew at a known national rate. The available historical sources identify examples and venue types but do not establish when barcades began, how many have opened or how quickly the format has grown.

What the U.S. arcade figures do—and do not—show

The Census Bureau’s article, published in November 2022, reports 3,350 U.S. amusement arcade establishments and 66,707 employees in 2020, based on County Business Patterns data. The employment figure covers the pay period that included March 12, 2020; annual payroll for those establishments was nearly $750 million. These are historical figures for amusement arcade establishments, not current counts and not a barcade growth measure. (U.S. Census Bureau)
