Why European Gas Prices Pulled Back Despite Ongoing Middle East Disruption

European gas prices pulled back as the June 2026 interim agreement between the United States and Iran raised hopes that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would resume and Gulf LNG deliveries would recover. That was a shift in expectations, not proof that supply had returned to normal: the European Commission reported on 3 September that Qatari LNG production remained shut down.

Why did European gas prices pull back?

Markets began pricing in a better chance of renewed LNG flows after the interim agreement was announced in mid-June. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that expectations of a Strait of Hormuz reopening put downward pressure on gas prices in Europe and Asia. It reported that LNG carrier transit was rising after the announcement, although traffic remained only a fraction of pre-conflict levels.

The disruption mattered well beyond the Gulf: before the conflict, almost 20% of global LNG supply transited the Strait of Hormuz, according to the IEA. The resulting interruption drove strong price volatility. As prospects for reopening improved, prices could ease even while physical exports remained constrained.

The move was a partial pullback, not a return to pre-conflict pricing. The IEA put the average European TTF price for Q2 2026 at nearly USD 16 per million British thermal units (MBtu), 32% above Q2 2025. TTF month-ahead fell 6% between 15 and 26 June, following the agreement announcement.

Had Middle East gas supply recovered?

Not fully, based on the latest specific update in the available 2026 reporting. On 3 September, the European Commission said Qatari LNG production was still shut down and the Middle East remained unstable. That does not conflict with the IEA’s report of rising carrier transit: ships can begin moving more freely while production, loading, and exports are still below normal.

The IEA’s forecast outlook relied on assumptions, not confirmed outcomes. It assumed a full reopening of the Strait in Q3 2026, operations resuming at undamaged regional facilities by early Q4, and Qatari and UAE LNG deliveries growing progressively from July through October. Those assumptions describe the pathway behind the forecast; they do not establish that the reopening or export recovery occurred as projected.

The cited reporting does not establish an aggregate Gulf export recovery or an October 3 TTF settlement. Those figures should not be inferred from the earlier price movement or from the forecast assumptions.

How can Gulf disruption affect Europe if direct Qatari imports are limited?

Europe’s direct exposure is only part of the story. The Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) reported that Qatar supplied 7% of EU LNG in winter 2025/26, equivalent to 4% of EU natural gas imports over that period. Those figures describe that winter, not a permanent share.

LNG also competes across regions. ACER identifies competition with Asia for flexible cargoes as a price risk, while the Commission says European TTF prices closely track Asia’s JKM benchmark through arbitrage. If Asian buyers are willing to pay more, cargoes may be drawn toward that market, raising the price Europe must offer even when Qatar’s direct share of EU imports is modest.

For that reason, the spread between TTF and JKM can help indicate how strongly the two markets are competing for available cargoes. It is one signal among several, not a stand-alone measure of European supply security.

Why can Europe have no immediate supply risk while prices remain volatile?

Security of supply and wholesale price direction answer different questions. The Commission’s 3 September assessment found no immediate EU security-of-supply risk, despite low storage relative to prior years. Its finding concerns whether the EU system could meet demand in the near term; it does not mean that gas was plentiful, that prices were stable, or that future disruptions could not change the outlook.

Storage levels, gas demand, and the capacity to import supply help determine whether the system can cover consumption. Wholesale prices also respond to expectations about global production, shipping access, and competition for LNG. The Commission captured that market uncertainty on 3 September: “Geopolitical uncertainty continues to drive significant price volatility.”

What did the Commission’s downside scenario say about prices?

The European Commission’s Spring 2026 downside scenario described a possible price level of EUR 80 per megawatt-hour (MWh) in late 2026 under prolonged disruption. This was a conditional scenario, not a live market quote or a baseline prediction. It illustrates how sustained disruption could change the outlook; it does not establish the price reached on any later date.

Which indicators help distinguish a price rebound from a lasting recovery?

  • Production and exports: Check whether Qatar and the UAE are producing, loading, and exporting LNG—not only whether facilities have reopened. Restored operations at some facilities would not by itself prove that exports had normalized.
  • Shipping through Hormuz: Track carrier movements and whether transit continues to rise toward pre-conflict levels. The IEA said the increase after the agreement was still only a fraction of prior traffic.
  • Europe–Asia competition: Watch TTF relative to JKM alongside evidence of cargo flows. Changing price signals can alter where flexible LNG is sent.
  • EU system conditions: Assess storage, demand, and import capacity to gauge adequacy separately from the direction of wholesale prices.
  • Benchmark date: Compare like-for-like TTF observations from the same contract period. The cited IEA price figures describe Q2 and the period from 15 to 26 June 2026; they are not October 3 prices.
