In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, your island follows the date and time set on your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. That clock affects what the island looks like and which critters are available, so a visitor, event, or activity may not appear when you expect it if your console’s time is inaccurate. Nintendo recommends keeping the system clock accurate.
How does the in-game clock work in Animal Crossing?
For New Horizons, the Nintendo console’s system date and time are the reference for the island. The game reflects the time of day and season when you play; it is not necessary to think of it as an independently running clock. Nintendo’s support guidance covers both Switch and Switch 2.
This makes time a gameplay condition as well as a visual detail. Day and night change the island’s atmosphere, seasons follow real life, and the critters you can find vary by season and hour.
What to check if something is missing
If an activity, visitor, or seasonal detail does not match what you expect, check the console’s date and time first. Nintendo warns that frequently changing these settings affects the island, but its general warning does not establish a particular penalty or consequence for every time change.

- Open the console’s System Settings.
- Select System, then Date and Time.
- Turn on Synchronize Clock via Internet to synchronize the console’s date and time.
These are Nintendo’s named settings for keeping the system clock accurate. The support guidance does not say that correcting the clock will make every missed activity or visitor appear immediately.
Why tie an island to the real-world clock?
The real-time clock helps make the island feel connected to a shared world: players encounter the same broad progression of day, night, and seasons rather than an entirely separate game calendar. In a developer interview about Animal Crossing: New Leaf, developer Moro said the team wanted players to share “that sense of the seasons and the time passing” by keeping the game in sync with the real world. That explains a design intention in New Leaf; it should not be taken as proof that every entry handles time identically.

The designers also explored ways to ease the inconvenience of fixed schedules. In the same interview, director Aya Kyogoku discussed ordinances that could adjust shop hours to fit players’ lifestyles. For New Horizons, a 2020 report by Game Developer quotes Kyogoku explaining that crafting offered another option for people who wanted to play late at night or early in the morning: “Because the Animal Crossing series is tied to the real-time clock, there are users who want to play late at night or who want to play early in the morning. By giving those users an option to craft, we thought this would be a new way for them to play and to acquire [craftable] items,” Kyogoku tells Launcher. This is a specific example of added flexibility, not a claim that every activity is available at every hour.
What the clock means for your play schedule
The benefit is a world whose light, seasons, and wildlife feel tied to familiar time passing. The trade-off is that real-life hours can affect what is available when you sit down to play. If you can only play at an unusual hour, some time-sensitive encounters may not line up with your schedule; the New Horizons crafting example gives players another way to obtain craftable items, but it does not remove all scheduling limits.

Does Version 3.0.0 change the clock rules?
Nintendo says Version 3.0.0 became available on January 15, 2026, adding content and features. That update announcement does not establish a change to the console-clock behavior described above. Nintendo’s FAQ also discusses the older Version 2.0.0 update, but it is not the latest update.
