Students demanded the arrest of those responsible for a September 27 campus clash and concrete assurances about their safety. Reports describe conflicting accounts of how the confrontation began; responsibility had not been established in the coverage available by October 3.
What happened at SRFTI on September 27?
The confrontation took place during a programme organised on campus by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP). The Telegraph reported that students entered the Main Theatre auditorium to protest the institute authorities’ decision to allow the programme. Students alleged they were chased and beaten; ABGP denied those allegations. The Telegraph’s account
SRFTI’s students’ union said students were verbally abused and attacked with sticks and stones, and that phones were snatched and clothes torn. The union called for an investigation drawing on CCTV footage, photographs, videos, medical records and eyewitness accounts. ABGP members gave a conflicting account, alleging that protesting students attacked them and damaged programme materials. These claims remain allegations, not established findings.
Why are students continuing the academic boycott?
Students said they would continue the boycott until those responsible for the violence were arrested. They also sought specific assurances of campus safety. Nachiket, the students’ union general secretary, said authorities wanted students to resume academic activities by shooting outside campus, but that students needed “the assurance of safety of students.”

The union argued that responsibility should be determined from evidence, irrespective of the political or institutional affiliation of those involved. Its demands also included clear rules for outside organisations holding events on campus, particularly programmes that could affect student safety or academic functioning.
What are students asking the institute to address?
- Accountability: arrest those responsible, following an evidence-based investigation.
- Safety: provide concrete safeguards for students on campus.
- First-year housing: accommodate first-year students who live off campus and are reluctant to return to rented accommodation.
- Use of campus venues: establish clear rules for outside organisations holding programmes at the institute.
The Telegraph reported that SRFTI opened its Transit Hostel and two staff quarters as temporary accommodation for first-year students. Students, however, said the institute’s safety assurances did not meet their demands.

What has the institute and police said or done?
On October 3, an institute official said authorities were in discussions with students, police and the administration to facilitate the resumption of classes. Kolkata Police personnel were maintaining security at the campus main gate, according to a PTI report carried by Hindustan Times.
The Telegraph reported Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera saying, “There can be no justification for violence within an academic institution,” and that SRFTI was taking steps to strengthen campus security and prevent a recurrence. Students said those steps did not provide the assurance they required.

What is known about cases, injuries and the investigation?
Published accounts reported different case counts at different times. The Times of India reported on September 29 that four cases had been registered: three naming unidentified SRFTI students and one naming ABGP. Hindustan Times later reported three FIRs and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe. These are dated media reports, not a consolidated current police tally.
The Times of India also reported 30 students and two faculty members injured on September 29; that figure is an earlier reported count, not a final independently confirmed total. The Telegraph reported that the SIT had submitted its first report to the chief secretary on Thursday and that no arrests had been made by Friday evening. Those details describe the status reported at the time, not necessarily the status after October 3.

As of the latest update in the reports cited here, no final finding assigning responsibility for the clash had been reported. The competing accounts should therefore remain attributed to the parties making them.

Students were still boycotting classes on Saturday, October 3, the sixth consecutive day classes had been suspended. The institute was discussing a return to academic activities, while students maintained that arrests and meaningful safety assurances were needed before they would end the boycott.
