The Government of India says it will cover 42 identified traffic corridors and combine traffic monitoring, adaptive signals, emergency-vehicle priority, public alerts and automated enforcement. A separate report describes how stolen-vehicle alerts may reach traffic officers, but that workflow is not detailed in the government announcement.
What has been approved—and what commuters should expect now
On 30 September 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the Delhi Police ITMS at an estimated cost of ₹1,789.52 crore, inclusive of taxes. The government’s stated plan is to implement it in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance. Its announced footprint is 42 identified traffic corridors.
Those are project scope and schedule figures, not confirmation that every corridor or feature is live. The approval release does not give a go-live date for individual corridors, identify a selected supplier, or report measured effects on congestion, crashes, response times or vehicle recovery.
The project is government traffic infrastructure, not a consumer app or device. The government release cites around 71 lakh active registered vehicles in Delhi as background to the project.

How the planned system is meant to manage traffic
The ITMS is intended to bring several functions together on a common platform. The components are complementary: detecting conditions, adjusting corridor operations, informing travelers and enforcing traffic rules.
Detect congestion and road incidents
The government says the system will support real-time detection of congestion, slow-moving traffic and road incidents. Traffic authorities are intended to use this information to arrange diversions and respond to incidents more quickly. The announcement describes intended capabilities, not proof of detection accuracy or a measured improvement in response time.

Adjust signals and prioritize emergency vehicles
Adaptive signals are planned to respond to traffic conditions, with coordination along identified corridors. The project also aims to support priority movement and green corridors for ambulances and other emergency vehicles. The announcement does not specify how quickly signals will adapt or how emergency priority will be activated.
Send traffic information to travelers
Variable Message Signs and digital platforms are planned to share information about congestion, diversions, parking availability and traffic conditions. The government says information may also be shared with navigation providers. The release does not name participating providers or establish that these planned feeds are available today.

Automate detection of traffic violations
Planned automated detection covers red-light and stop-line violations, speeding, wrong-way driving, helmet and seat-belt non-use, illegal parking, and mobile-phone use while driving. The announcement does not specify the enforcement workflow, evidence-review process or when each detection feature will be introduced.
Support police operations through command centres
Traffic Command and Control Centres are planned on a common platform, backed by secure data-centre and disaster-recovery infrastructure. The government describes the system as integrating traffic data and operational tools; it has not published operational performance results for the planned centres.

How stolen-vehicle alerts are expected to work
The government announcement says AI-based analytics will assist in identifying stolen, hot-listed and blacklisted vehicles, repeat violators, and vehicles connected with hit-and-run incidents. It does not explain the stolen-vehicle alert workflow or name the databases involved.
Hindustan Times reported on 3 October 2026 that, once a stolen-vehicle FIR is registered at a police station, an alert is expected to be sent through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) to the traffic inspector responsible for the area. The newspaper attributed that description to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Tyagi. It also reported that officials described anticipated movement alerts for traffic-zone officers and integration with CCTNS, e-Sarathi and VAHAN. These are details from that report, rather than workflow specifications in the Cabinet approval release.

Hindustan Times also reported, citing police data, that Delhi registered 35,014 motor vehicle theft cases in 2025. That figure provides context for the planned capability; it is not a result of the new system.
What Delhi residents can use already
Delhi Traffic Police’s official website currently displays live traffic status, traffic alerts and advisories, and a service to check whether a vehicle has been towed or impounded. These existing public-facing services are distinct from the newly approved ITMS and do not establish that its planned citywide functions are operational.
For current conditions, residents can use the Delhi Traffic Police website’s live status and alerts. A towed- or impounded-vehicle lookup is a different service from tracking a stolen vehicle through the planned ITMS.
What the announcement does not establish
- It does not confirm that all 42 corridors or any specific planned feature are already live.
- It does not name a selected supplier or provide procurement-award details.
- It does not set out a corridor-by-corridor activation calendar.
- It does not report measured reductions in traffic jams, crashes or theft, or faster police response.
Delhi’s 2022 Crash Report discusses traffic-management technologies including cameras, loop detectors, Variable Message Signs and traffic management centres. That historical context should not be treated as a specification or confirmation of deployment for the newly approved ITMS.
