Claude Code updating itself does not mean the Skills you use are being updated too. Keep team-owned Skills in a version-controlled repository, choose an explicit route for distributing changes, and review each change before using it. Anthropic documents separate mechanisms for updating Claude Code and distributing Skills; it does not promise automatic upstream updates for every Skill installation.
Do Claude Code skills update automatically?
Not necessarily. Claude Code’s built-in updater updates the application, not every separately distributed Skill. Anthropic says Claude Code checks for application updates at startup and periodically while running; downloaded updates take effect the next time the application starts. You can also run claude update manually. See Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guidance and CLI reference.
Skills are distributed separately: Anthropic describes sharing them through version control, installing them as plugins from a marketplace, or adding them manually under ~/.claude/skills. Those routes do not establish that Claude Code’s application updater fetches new Skill files from their original repositories.
How do I update Claude skills?
First identify how the Skill reaches your Claude setup. Then use that distribution path to deliver its latest reviewed version. A repository is a useful source of truth for team-owned Skills because changes can be proposed and reviewed before users receive them.

For a manually installed Skill
Update the Skill files in the location where you installed them, such as ~/.claude/skills, using your own trusted source or team process. Anthropic documents this as a manual installation location, not as a folder that is automatically synchronized with an upstream repository. Check the installed files against the version your team intends to use.
For a Skill distributed through a plugin marketplace
Follow the marketplace’s update process. For an organization marketplace synced with GitHub, Anthropic says an administrator can trigger a sync after repository changes are pushed. If automatic sync is enabled, a merged pull request triggers a sync when it includes a plugin version bump. That condition matters: the documentation does not say every push or every merged pull request automatically updates every user. See Anthropic’s organization plugin-management guidance.

For a repository-mounted managed agent
In Anthropic’s managed-agent setup, the repository’s root .claude/skills directory is scanned at session start. This is specific to that setup; do not assume it describes local Claude Code installs or every Skill installation. If a session was already running when the repository changed, check the behavior of that setup and whether a new session is needed to scan the updated files. See Anthropic’s managed-agent Skills documentation.
How do I keep Claude Code skills in sync across a team?
- Choose a source of truth. Keep team-owned Skills in a version-controlled repository and make proposed changes through reviewable commits or pull requests. Anthropic identifies version control as a way to share Skills with a team in its Skills overview.
- Document the distribution route. For each Skill, note whether team members install it manually, receive it through a plugin marketplace, or use a repository-mounted managed agent. The right update action depends on that route.
- Make synchronization explicit. For a GitHub-synced organization marketplace, record who triggers a manual sync after changes—or whether automatic sync is enabled and plugin version bumps are included in merged pull requests.
- Review changes before distribution. Inspect the Skill instructions and bundled files, with particular attention to executable code, dependencies, and directions to access external networks or install packages. Only then accept and distribute the change.
- Check the consumer’s copy. After synchronization or installation, compare what the user or agent receives with the intended version. Do not use a successful Claude Code application update as evidence that the Skill itself changed.
Why is Claude still using an old skill?
The most useful first check is the Skill’s delivery path, not the Claude Code app version. A manually copied Skill may simply still be the old copy. A marketplace Skill may be waiting for an administrator’s sync, or a merged change may lack the plugin version bump required for automatic sync in the documented organization setup. A repository-mounted managed agent scans its root .claude/skills directory at session start, so a running session may not reflect a change made after it started.

- Confirm which Skill file or plugin the consumer is using and where it came from.
- Check whether the source repository contains the intended change and whether it was reviewed and merged.
- For a GitHub-synced organization marketplace, verify that a sync was triggered or that automatic sync is enabled and the merged pull request includes a plugin version bump.
- For a managed agent mounting a repository, verify the Skill is in the repository’s root
.claude/skillsdirectory and account for scanning at session start. - For a manual installation, update the installed files through the intended trusted process; do not expect
claude updateto synchronize them.
Review a Skill update as a software change
A Skill can contain instructions and bundled files, and may direct Claude to install third-party packages. Anthropic advises: “Only install skills only from trusted sources.” Review the changed content before accepting it, especially code, dependencies, and external network instructions. See Anthropic’s guidance on using Skills.
