Steve Reich turns 90 on October 3, 2026, with a new work at the center of a worldwide birthday season. In All Your Ways, an 18-minute piece for large ensemble, premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival in August with the Colin Currie Group. The season pairs that premiere and its tour with performances of music Reich has made across more than six decades.
What Reich is making at 90
Reich’s official announcement describes the 2026–2027 season as a worldwide celebration of his 90th birthday. Its centerpiece is In All Your Ways, an 18-minute work for large ensemble premiered in August 2026 at the Edinburgh International Festival with the Colin Currie Group. The Hindustan Times’ October 3 birthday profile also identifies the piece as an instrumental work and places its premiere in Edinburgh.
The official announcement says the work will tour major halls, including in Amsterdam, New York, London and Paris. It also names a Carnegie Hall birthday concert, a Reich festival at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, a Barbican concert series and a multi-day focus at Philharmonie de Paris. These are season-level announcements, not a guarantee of current dates or ticket availability; check the relevant venue’s listing for its latest program and sales information. How to hear the music
Reich’s music often makes a small set of sounds do more over time. Repeated patterns establish a pulse; gradual changes in timing, texture or harmony alter how those patterns feel. The listener can hear a slight shift accumulate into a new perception of the whole. That description fits much of his work, but it is not a formula for every piece.

Reich’s official biography describes his contribution as helping move composition away from extreme complexity and toward new ways of reconsidering pulsation and tonal attraction. It points to a wide-ranging catalog rather than a single style, including It’s Gonna Rain, Drumming, Music for 18 Musicians, Tehillim and Different Trains. The pieces offer different ways into the sound world: from early experiments with recorded speech to music for ensembles and works with a stronger melodic or historical narrative. Where the practice began
In a September 22, 2026 interview with The Guardian, Reich recalled hearing Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring as a teenager and described the experience as “completely life-changing.” He said his decision to become a composer began at 14. That is Reich’s account of a formative moment, as reported in the interview.

The same interview recounts Reich’s early experiments with two Wollensak tape recorders and his practice of playing against tape in Piano Phase. In his recollection, the technology was not simply a way to reproduce a performance: looping and playing against recorded sound helped create the musical process itself. The Guardian’s headline also quotes Reich’s blunt assessment: “Good music is good music, and most music is not!” The Guardian interview
