Kim Yo Jong said Kim Jong Un oversaw it. South Korea reported detecting a launch from near Wonsan; its reported flight distance was more than 700 kilometers, while Japan estimated about 680 kilometers. North Korea’s claims that the missile used AI and unusual maneuvering have not been independently verified.
What North Korea announced
Kim Yo Jong said the firing drill took place earlier on Saturday, Oct. 3. Yonhap reported that her statement was carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). She described it as a drill involving a “strategic weapon” and said Kim Jong Un oversaw it. Yonhap quoted her as saying: “At dawn of this morning, a drill of firing a strategic weapon toward the East Sea of Korea was conducted.” Yonhap’s report attributes the announcement to Kim; it is not independent confirmation of the weapon’s performance.
Where it was launched and how far it flew
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected a ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan area. South Korea’s reported estimate was more than 700 kilometers (435 miles). Japan’s Defense Ministry estimated about 680 kilometers (422 miles), according to the Associated Press, which reported that the missile landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
| Reporting source | Reported distance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, reported by Reuters and AP | More than 700 km (435 miles) | South Korean military estimate; the reports do not provide a reconciled figure. |
| Japan’s Defense Ministry, reported by AP | About 680 km (422 miles) | Japanese estimate; AP said the missile landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. |
The figures are separate national estimates, not a single agreed measurement. Their difference alone does not show that either military failed to track the missile. Reuters reported South Korea’s estimate, while AP reported both countries’ accounts: Reuters and AP.

What North Korea claimed about the missile
Kim claimed the missile used a wave-like trajectory with low-altitude changes in its path, and she invoked artificial intelligence. Reuters quoted her saying, “Whenever we applied the wave-like trajectory mode to missiles, the enemy failed to track the targets from their first skip points.” Reuters reported that she offered no evidence for the tracking assertion. AP quoted her as saying, “There is no way to avoid this attack”; that is Kim’s rhetoric, not an independent assessment of whether the missile could evade interception.
Those technical descriptions remain North Korean claims. The reviewed reports do not independently verify AI use, the claimed trajectory or maneuvering, or the assertion that opposing forces could not track the missile. AP reported that South Korea had not immediately commented on those claimed capabilities.

Is the missile identified, or was a nuclear payload confirmed?
No specific missile model is identified in the reviewed reports. They describe it as an intermediate-range strategic missile or a ballistic missile. Kim’s use of “strategic” is her characterization; the reports do not establish the missile’s model, whether it carried a nuclear warhead, or whether it has a confirmed nuclear delivery role.

AP placed the announcement amid heightened inter-Korean tension following land-mine blasts along the border. South Korea said three soldiers were injured in blasts on Sept. 21; a joint South Korean–U.N. Command inspection attributed the blasts to North Korean mines, while North Korea denied responsibility, AP reported.
