The A47 is not closing continuously for weeks. A report published on October 3, 2026, lists overnight restrictions around Norwich in the week beginning October 5, followed by a separate set of closures from October 24 to 26 for an escorted transformer delivery. Check National Highways’ live updates before travelling because planned closures can change at short notice.
What is closing, and when?
The October 3 report gives two distinct disruption periods: restrictions linked to the A47 Thickthorn improvement scheme in the week beginning October 5, and convoy-related closures later in October. The timings below are the reported schedule, not a guarantee of current road status.
Thickthorn scheme restrictions: October 3–9
- Saturday, October 3: One lane between Honingham roundabout and Wood Lane junction is reported closed, with temporary traffic lights.
- From Monday, October 5: The A47 westbound is reported closed overnight between the A140 and Thickthorn junction.
- Tuesday, October 6, to Friday, October 9: Further overnight lane restrictions and traffic management are reported at the A47/A11 Thickthorn roundabout. The report lists work hours of 20:00–06:00 BST and a signed diversion via the A1074 and A140.
These are overnight work periods, not a continuous closure of the whole A47 for several weeks. See the AOL report published October 3, 2026 for the reported schedule.
Transformer convoy restrictions: October 24–26
The later restrictions are associated with an escorted transformer delivery and are separate from the initial scheme-related overnight works.

- 20:00 Saturday, October 24, to 06:00 Monday, October 26: The report lists the A47 eastbound entry slip road at Thickthorn as closed. It also lists the eastbound A47 between Wood Lane Junction South roundabout and Longwater Interchange as closed, along with Norwich Road at Honingham roundabout in both directions.
- 20:00 Sunday, October 25, to 06:00 Monday, October 26: A further eastbound A47 closure is reported between Watton Road and Ipswich Road, to reinstall traffic management.
The AOL report says the convoy will travel from the Port of King’s Lynn to Swardeston under police escort at speeds up to 12 mph (19 km/h). It gives maximum reported dimensions of 85 metres (278 feet) and a weight of up to 350 tonnes; these figures are attributed to that report, not to the National Highways project page.
Where is the Thickthorn project?
Thickthorn is near Norwich, where the A47 meets the A11. National Highways says the scheme will add two new connections between the roads to ease congestion. Its A47 Thickthorn project page lists a project cost range of £216 million to £239 million and an end date of 2028/29.

The page also describes a broader traffic-management arrangement planned to switch in October 2026: two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane are planned through to autumn 2027. That longer-running arrangement is not the same as the specific overnight closures dated in the October 3 news report.

- Before setting out, check National Highways’ Thickthorn project updates and its live closure information for the latest status, dates, and diversion details.
- Allow extra time if travelling through the affected junctions during the reported overnight windows.
- Follow signed diversions on the road. The October 3 report lists a diversion via the A1074 and A140 for the October 6–9 Thickthorn restrictions; check live information for any changes before relying on that route.
National Highways warns that closures can change at short notice, so the reported dates and hours should be treated as a snapshot rather than a live traffic update.
