Starting in fall 2026, the University of Oregon is replacing its traditional resident assistant (RA) staffing model with two peer-student jobs: Community Assistants (CAs), who focus on connection and community-building, and Community Safety Assistants (CSAs), who focus on safety and after-hours response. Some current RAs have a contract-defined path into limited-duration Community Coordinator roles, but eligibility is conditional—not automatic.
What is changing, and when?
University Housing says the new model takes effect in fall term 2026–27. Rather than assigning the traditional RA role to new student staff, UO is dividing many peer-support functions between community-building and safety-focused positions. The university describes the goal as deepening support, belonging, timely care, connection, and guidance for students living on campus (UO University Housing Student Leadership).
How do the new roles differ?
| Role | Main focus | Time and appointment | Compensation basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community Assistant (CA), also called Community Builder in the labor agreement | Welcoming residents, building connection and inclusion, hosting events, checking in, referring students to campus resources, supporting transitions to campus living, and mediating minor-to-moderate roommate conflicts. | UO estimates an average of 12–14 hours per week. The published position description lists an appointment from September 14, 2026, through June 12, 2027. | 65% credit against the RESW room-and-meal-plan rate; see the 2026–27 amounts below. |
| Community Safety Assistant (CSA) | Safety rounds, after-hours concerns, support in moments of need, and connections to professional staff. The agreement also lists evening and late-night work, regular ambulatory surveillance, incident reporting, low-level emergency response and crisis intervention, and community-standards enforcement. | UO estimates an average of 14–18 hours per week. The cited role materials do not state an appointment date range. | 85% credit against the RESW room-and-meal-plan rate. |
| Community Coordinator | An elevated leadership role supporting live-in professional staff and residence-life committees. | Limited-duration role for qualifying continuing RAs transitioning in 2026–27. | Eligible coordinators receive the 2025–26 RA contract rate and schedule, described in the agreement as 100% credit to the RESW room-and-meal-plan rate. |
| Traditional RA | Legacy live-in role with bundled responsibilities; the prior student-worker policy described live-in staff such as RAs as receiving room and board plus a small monthly payroll stipend. | The prior policy described an average commitment of 20 hours per week. That figure is from the earlier policy and is not a directly comparable workload measure for the new roles. | The earlier policy description is not a directly comparable cash-wage figure. |
Role duties, estimated hours, and compensation terms are from UO Housing, its position description, and the UOSW bargaining agreement (Student Leadership; UOSW Bargaining Agreement, 2025–27; RESW FAQs; CA position description; Student Workers policy). Because the legacy description and new roles use different terms and compensation structures, the figures should not be read as a like-for-like comparison.
What happens to current UO RAs?
The bargaining agreement preserves the RA title, role, and general responsibilities for in-service RAs during 2025–26. From 2026–27, a defined group of “Status Quo Resident Assistants” can transition to Community Coordinator positions if they meet the agreement’s conditions: they must have served as RAs in 2024–25, continued through 2025–26 without a service break, and satisfy UO’s selection, hiring, and satisfactory-evaluation criteria (UOSW Bargaining Agreement, 2025–27).

This is a route for qualifying incumbents, not a guarantee that every current RA will receive a coordinator job. The public contract terms do not establish the outcome for every individual student employee.
What does the CA compensation amount mean?
For 2026–27, UO says the CA’s 65% room-and-meal-plan credit is valued at $11,819. The CA is responsible for the remaining 35%, listed as $6,364 for the academic year and described by the university as approximately $707 per month over the nine-month appointment. The CA FAQ says the role is not hourly; the figures describe a housing and meal-plan arrangement, not an hourly wage (UO RESW FAQs).

The agreement’s RESW rate is based on the most commonly available standard double room with a standard meal plan and is updated annually. CAs are assigned furnished standard double rooms with roommates. UO says building placements depend on departmental and operational needs, and room amenities may differ (UOSW Bargaining Agreement, 2025–27; UO RESW FAQs).
Why does UO say it is changing the model?
UO’s public explanation centers on strengthening residential support, belonging, timely care, connection, and guidance. A proposed 2026–27 housing-rate document lists RA restructuring adjustments among wage-cost drivers, alongside personnel, food, utilities, maintenance, and capital costs. That shows the restructuring is part of housing budget planning; it does not establish that cost savings caused the redesign. The document is a proposal, not a finalized FY27 operating budget (UO proposed FY27 housing rates).

What is not yet established?
The university’s materials describe intended duties and goals, but do not provide a published comparison measuring whether the new model improves or worsens resident safety, belonging, satisfaction, or other outcomes. Those effects should not be treated as demonstrated results before such evidence is available.
