After a game, start with encouragement and let your child decide whether to talk about how they played. Project Play advises parents not to analyze a teen’s performance on the ride home; instead, it suggests asking whether the parent provided the kind of support the teen needed. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) likewise recommends unconditional support, patience and positive comments.
What to say after the game
Keep your first response calm and low-pressure. You might say, “I loved watching you play,” or “I’m glad I got to be there.” Then pause. Those are practical examples, not quoted guidance from the organizations cited here; the principle is to show support without turning the ride into an unsolicited review.
If your child wants to talk, listen before offering advice. You can ask whether they want comfort, help thinking through the game, or simply company. If they would rather be quiet, respect that. Project Play’s checklist for parents of teens ages 13–17 specifically discourages analyzing performance during the ride home and redirects the conversation toward whether the parent’s support was helpful (Project Play).
Why timing and tone matter
Immediate criticism puts the parent’s evaluation at the center of a moment when the athlete may still be processing the game. A child-led conversation leaves room for the young athlete to decide what matters and when they are ready to discuss it. The AAP advises parents to make support unconditional, notice what their child is doing right, and set realistic goals that reflect the child’s interests rather than the parent’s ambitions (AAP, “Parenting an Athlete”).

| Approach | When it happens | Whose agenda leads | Likely tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate performance analysis | Right after the game, often on the ride home | The parent’s evaluation | Can feel like judgment, even when advice is intended to help |
| Supportive, child-led conversation | When the child is ready to talk | The athlete’s needs and interests | Encouraging and attentive |
This distinction is not a rule against ever discussing performance. If your child later wants to talk about a mistake, a goal or a practice plan, you can help them think it through. The useful difference is whether the discussion is invited and constructive, or imposed as criticism or shame.
Encourage effort without making a result define success
A disappointing performance is not a verdict on a child’s ability or worth. The AAP recommends redefining success so setbacks do not become personal failures and setting realistic goals that belong to the child. Focus on effort, learning, teamwork or enjoyment when those are what the child values—not only on scores, playing time or wins.

The AAP has reported that about 70% of children and teens drop out of organized sports by age 13. That is an approximate figure reported in its 2023 coverage, not a current-year cohort estimate. It is a reminder to keep sports positive, not evidence that a single car-ride conversation causes a child to quit. The AAP’s burnout guidance emphasizes fun, teamwork, regular exercise and valuing young athletes beyond their results (AAP, burnout guidance).

Project Play’s national survey findings report that 21% of former players, compared with 9% of current players, said they had felt pressured to play. It also reports that 18% of former players, compared with 13% of current players, said they had been compared with other players (Project Play survey findings). These are reported differences between groups; they do not prove that parental pressure or one postgame conversation caused a player to stop.

For a teen, Project Play suggests turning the question around: ask whether you supported them in the way they needed. That makes the parent’s conduct—not the athlete’s performance—the subject of the check-in.
