Ohio Mutual Insurance Group completed its merger with Idaho-based Gem State Insurance effective October 1, 2026. Gem State has been redomesticated to Ohio and joined Ohio Mutual’s mutual holding company structure. The company says Gem State will keep its name in the market as Ohio Mutual plans to expand products and member benefits for Idaho policyholders.
What the completed merger means
Ohio Mutual’s October 1, 2026 announcement says Gem State Insurance joined its family of companies alongside Ohio Mutual Insurance Company, United Ohio Insurance Company, Casco Indemnity Company, and United Mutual Insurance Company. Gem State was redomesticated to Ohio as part of the transaction.
The merger followed unanimous board approval in April and approval by Gem State members at a special meeting on July 1, 2026. Ohio Mutual’s April announcement said the proposal required policyholder and regulatory approval in Idaho and Ohio. The completion announcement confirms the closing but does not give the dates or separate details of regulatory orders.

Ohio Mutual says Gem State products will continue to be marketed under the Gem State Insurance name. It also expects updated visual branding, but has not announced a schedule or described the changes.

The company says it plans to add products and member benefits in Idaho to build on Gem State’s previous product lines. The announcement does not identify specific products or benefits, or say when they will become available.

Ohio Mutual also said it had maintained an “A / Stable” rating for 33 consecutive years and had been named to Ward’s 50 nine times since 2009. These are the insurer’s reported rating history and recognition, not measures of an individual policy’s coverage or service.
What Gem State policyholders should verify
The merger announcement does not specify changes to policy contracts, billing, claims handling, or service contacts. It therefore does not establish that any policyholder’s coverage or day-to-day process has changed. For account-specific information, check current policy documents and contact the insurer or your independent agent.

- Check your coverage terms and renewal date; do not assume they changed solely because of the merger.
- Use the claims and billing contacts listed in your current documents unless your insurer or agent provides updated instructions.
- Ask your agent whether any newly offered Idaho products are available for your needs once the company announces them.
Why the companies said they pursued the deal
When the merger was proposed, Gem State President and Board Chair Gene Guilfoy said the partnership would allow Gem State to build on its existing foundation, offer additional products, and expand its Idaho market share while continuing to serve policyholders and agents. At completion, Ohio Mutual President and CEO Mark C. Russell welcomed Gem State’s agents, members, and associates and said the company looked forward to building on its legacy.
