How Atlanta won the deciding game
Michael Harris II gave the Braves an early lead with a three-run home run in the first inning. Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson added solo homers as Atlanta built its 6-2 win. The Braves had lost Game 2, 4-3, after giving up a two-run lead in the eighth, making the finale a winner-take-all game. The Braves’ recap identifies this as Atlanta’s first winner-take-all postseason victory since Game 7 of the 1996 NL Championship Series.
Ray Kerr, a 32-year-old reliever used as the opener, kept Philadelphia scoreless over 3 1/3 innings and allowed one hit. Atlanta then used Grant Holmes, Robert Suarez, Didier Fuentes and Dylan Dodd before Chris Sale entered for the final four outs. Sale struck out Bryce Harper to end the eighth.
Ray Kerr’s unexpected start set the tone
Kerr had been at Triple-A Gwinnett six weeks earlier while working back from Tommy John surgery in 2024. He learned the day before Game 3 that he would open the game, with a demanding assignment that included facing left-handed sluggers Harper and Kyle Schwarber more than once. Kerr struck Harper out and also got him to ground out; Schwarber singled and walked, according to the Braves’ account.

Manager Walt Weiss called Kerr’s outing a “best-case scenario,” saying he got through the top of the Phillies’ order twice and spared Atlanta from having to use another pitcher there. Weiss added, “Hopefully Ray Kerr became a bit of a household name tonight. He deserves it. He’s got an amazing story of perseverance.”
Kerr said, “This was just another Thursday. Growing up, I had a hard time. So, this was nothing.” He also said he had dreamed about a moment like this and had not yet processed that it had happened. Sale praised Kerr’s effort, saying, “To do what he did tonight for us, that’s unbelievable. He did everything he could for this ballclub. He put it on the line for us tonight.”

Sale finished after a heavy Game 2 workload
Sale had thrown 95 pitches over 6 1/3 innings in Game 2 a little more than 48 hours before his relief appearance in the clincher. He came in with four outs left and struck out Harper to close the eighth, helping Atlanta complete the win. The Braves’ recap describes Atlanta’s six consecutive losses in winner-take-all postseason games before this victory as the third-longest such streak in MLB history.

The best-of-five National League Division Series begins October 3 at Dodger Stadium. Game 1 is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET); the Braves’ recap lists FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX One as broadcasters, while the Dodgers’ announcement confirms the 1 p.m. PT start. Los Angeles hosts Games 1 and 2, and Game 5 if the series goes that far.

Atlanta won five of six regular-season meetings with Los Angeles in 2026, including a three-game sweep at Truist Park in August. That record is useful context, not a forecast: the postseason series begins anew. This is the clubs’ sixth postseason meeting and their first since the 2021 NLCS. Their most recent NLDS meeting was in 2018, when the Dodgers won three games to one. Los Angeles enters as the back-to-back World Series champion from 2024 and 2025, according to the Dodgers’ announcement.
