American Bankers Association (ABA) President and CEO Rob Nichols announced the relaunch of #BanksNeverAskThat and #PracticeSafeChecks during CNBC’s Squawk Box on October 1, 2026. The campaigns focus on recognizing scams—including AI-enabled impersonation—and reducing check-fraud risks for consumers and small businesses.
What Nichols announced on CNBC
The relaunch brings back both ABA campaigns. For 2026–2027, #BanksNeverAskThat adds a “Scam Slayer” initiative that encourages consumers and bankers to spot warning signs and help protect themselves or others. ABA says the campaign site will feature stories of people who intervened before victims lost money. #PracticeSafeChecks returns with practical check-fraud guidance for consumers and small businesses. ABA’s announcement and its ABA Banking Journal report say more than 2,500 banks have participated since the campaigns began; that is ABA’s reported figure.
How to recognize an impersonation scam
AI and deepfakes can make a text, image, video or voice recording appear to come from a bank, government agency, business, friend or relative. A familiar voice or convincing video is not proof that a request is real. ABA highlights these warning signs:
- Unexpected contact, especially from someone claiming there is an urgent problem.
- Pressure to act immediately or keep the conversation secret.
- A request to move money.
- A request for account numbers, passwords, PINs or other sensitive information.
Rob Nichols said scams are “increasingly difficult to detect,” particularly as criminals use AI and deepfakes to impersonate trusted people and organizations. If a message or call raises concern, stop before acting. Contact the person, business or bank independently using a phone number or channel you already know and trust—not contact details supplied in the suspicious message. ABA risk executive Paul Benda emphasized that pausing to verify through a trusted channel can stop a scam before money is lost. ABA’s release includes both statements.

What #PracticeSafeChecks covers
#PracticeSafeChecks focuses on check fraud and safer check use. ABA’s guidance encourages people to consider digital payment options where practical and includes check-writing tips such as using a gel pen. A pen choice is only one precaution; it does not eliminate the risk of fraud. Small businesses can also ask their bank about Positive Pay, a service that helps check payments be matched against information the business provides, and consider digital payments where appropriate. Campaign resources and bank registration
ABA says its free toolkit for participating banks includes videos, customizable social media content, print materials, branch and ATM signage, and other resources in English and Spanish. Banks and state association members can register without charge but need an ABA account. Previous participants must register again to access the 2026 materials. Why Nichols called for broader action
Nichols also said social media platforms and telecommunications companies have an important role in preventing scams. ABA Banking Journal reported that he called for a whole-of-government approach as well. The campaign announcement therefore pairs individual steps—pause and verify—with a call for action by the services scammers use to reach people. ABA Banking Journal’s coverage recounts his comments.
