The “butterfly effect” is a memorable name for sensitive dependence on initial conditions: in some deterministic systems, a tiny difference in the starting state can grow into a substantial difference later. It does not mean every small action causes a major event—and Edward Lorenz’s famous butterfly-and-tornado title was a question about weather prediction, not proof that a butterfly can cause a tornado.
What does the butterfly effect mean?
The phrase describes how two versions of a system that begin in slightly different states can follow increasingly different paths. It is especially associated with chaotic systems, where small differences in initial conditions can become important over time.
That is different from saying the system is random. A deterministic system evolves according to rules that determine what follows from a specified state. Predictability is a separate practical question: it depends on whether the starting state can be measured precisely enough and whether the system’s evolution can be calculated accurately enough. University College London’s notes on the butterfly effect emphasize that distinction.
So the phrase is not a universal rule that small actions always lead to huge consequences. It is a way to describe a particular kind of sensitivity in systems such as mathematical models of the atmosphere.

Where did the name come from?
The famous wording came from a talk by meteorologist Edward N. Lorenz, titled “Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil Set off a Tornado in Texas?” The reproduced text says he presented it at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s 139th meeting in Washington, D.C., on December 29, 1972. The talk’s title posed a question about atmospheric predictability; it was not a report of an observed butterfly triggering a tornado.
Lorenz’s 1972 discussion was also careful about what the image implied. He explained that a small disturbance might affect the sequence of weather events without increasing or decreasing their long-term frequency. He wrote: “If the flap of a butterfly’s wings can be instrumental in generating a tornado, it can equally well be instrumental in preventing a tornado.”

The talk also qualified the scientific picture available at the time. Lorenz said, “Although we cannot claim to have proven that the atmosphere is unstable, the evidence that it is so is overwhelming.” That statement belongs to his 1972 account, not a timeless summary of what has since been established.
How did Lorenz discover the effect?
The butterfly image came after a more prosaic discovery: a weather-model rerun that did not reproduce an earlier result. The American Physical Society’s historical account dates the episode to winter 1961, when Lorenz was running a 12-equation weather model on a Royal McBee computer.

- Lorenz restarted a simulation by entering values from a printout of an earlier run.
- The computer had stored six decimal places internally, while the printout displayed only three.
- The new run therefore started from values that were slightly different from the original internal values.
- When Lorenz returned, the simulated weather had diverged from the earlier run.
The key was not a computer malfunction. As the American Physical Society’s account explains, rounding changed the starting values, and the model’s deterministic equations carried that small difference into a very different later trajectory.
Does a butterfly really cause a tornado?
Not in the simple, literal sense suggested by the title. Lorenz used the butterfly as an image for a tiny perturbation in a complex system, not as a claim that one insect supplies the energy for a tornado or guarantees that one will happen. His point was about how small differences may influence the course of a weather system.

A 2024 letter by Roger A. Pielke, Bo-Wen Shen, and Xubin Zeng in Physics Today draws a distinction between sensitivity in Lorenz’s mathematical models and a literal butterfly’s effect on the real atmosphere. The authors conclude that “a butterfly in Brazil cannot cause a tornado in Texas because of its tiny spatial scale and the dominant role of molecular dissipation at that scale.” That is the letter authors’ argument about the real-atmosphere claim; it does not erase the model-level concept of sensitive dependence.

- Confusing determinism with predictability: Rules can determine how a system evolves, while imperfect measurements and calculations still limit how far ahead its state can be predicted.
- Treating the metaphor as a universal law: The phrase does not establish that every small choice, disturbance, or action will have a large consequence.
- Reading the title as a proven causal claim: Lorenz asked a question about long-term weather prediction; he did not document a butterfly causing a specific tornado.
- Assuming effects only amplify toward disaster: A perturbation might be instrumental in preventing an event as well as generating one, as Lorenz explicitly noted.
- Equating event order with event frequency: Lorenz proposed that minuscule disturbances might modify the sequence of weather events without changing their long-term frequency.
What the “three days” detail does—and does not—say
In his 1972 talk, Lorenz reported that small errors in the coarser structure of weather patterns tended to double in about three days in the simulations he described. That is a historical finding from his talk, not a general rule for how quickly every disturbance grows or a current operational forecast limit.
