Keith Sonderling was confirmed as U.S. secretary of labor on September 30, 2026. The Senate approved his nomination 47–41, with 12 senators not voting, according to the official roll call.
How the Senate voted
The Senate’s final confirmation vote, Roll Call 256, was 47 yeas and 41 nays, with 12 senators not voting. The question was confirmation of Keith Sonderling of Florida to be secretary of labor. The Senate’s official vote record lists the result.
Earlier on September 30, senators voted 53–47 to invoke cloture, the procedural step that brought the nomination toward a final vote. The cloture roll call is separate from the confirmation tally.
The Senate HELP Committee had voted 12–11 on July 30, 2026, to report the nomination favorably. Its record identifies the nomination as PN1129-119 and records the Senate’s September 30 confirmation. The committee nomination record provides that history.

Who Keith Sonderling is
Sonderling was already serving as acting secretary before the Senate confirmed him. He had been deputy secretary of labor, overseeing the department’s day-to-day operations, including planning, budget formulation, financial management, information technology and human resources. The Department of Labor’s official biography also says President Trump designated him acting director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in June 2026, concurrently with his DOL role, and that he held other acting federal positions in 2025.
His earlier federal work included senior roles in the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division and service as a Republican commissioner on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 2020 to 2024. DOL says he first served at the department from 2017 to 2020. In a 2025 announcement, the department credited a self-audit program developed during that period with collecting more than $7 million for nearly 11,000 workers. That figure is DOL’s account of the program, not an independently audited estimate. The department’s announcement describes his appointment and earlier work.

What the secretary of labor does
According to DOL, the secretary is the president’s principal adviser on labor and workforce matters and leads the department’s administration and enforcement of federal laws covering wages, workplace safety and health, and retirement and health benefits. Sonderling’s confirmation puts him at the head of an agency responsible for those areas; the vote itself does not establish what policies he will pursue.
