How to use this 2026 phone shortlist
The 11 entries below are drawn from current buying guides and expert coverage available on October 3, 2026. They are not a ranked, head-to-head test: the guides differ in scope, category and publication date, and not every phone has the same level of completed review evidence. In particular, a phone appearing in a guide does not by itself establish that it has received a full independent review.
Before choosing, weigh your budget and preferred platform, then check size, camera needs (especially telephoto zoom), battery testing, performance, software-support terms and local carrier compatibility. Published prices and availability change, and the sources cited here do not establish one current price for every model or market.
Which phones are worth considering?
1. Apple iPhone 17 — mainstream iPhone choice
Stuff names the iPhone 17 its best phone overall, arguing that it delivers a compelling core experience without the Pro price premium. It is the clearest pick here for someone who wants an iPhone and does not have a specific reason to pay for a Pro model. Stuff’s guide

3. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra — premium Android and power-user choice
Tech Advisor names the S26 Ultra its best Android phone, highlighting its Privacy Display, performance and charging improvements. Consider it if those premium features matter more than finding the lowest-cost option; the recommendation is Tech Advisor’s, not a universal consensus. Tech Advisor’s guide

4. Google Pixel 10a — value-minded Android choice
Both TechRadar and WIRED include the Pixel 10a as a budget-oriented option. That makes it a useful starting point for a value shortlist, but the cited guides do not provide a comparable current price here or establish exactly what capabilities a buyer gives up versus a flagship. Check the specific offer and review the camera, performance and support terms before deciding. TechRadar · WIRED
5. Google Pixel 11 series — emerging flagship option, review status matters
WIRED’s September guide includes the Pixel 11 series, but TechRadar says its Pixel 11 reviews were still pending. Treat it as an emerging option rather than a fully established tested winner, and look for a completed review of the exact model you intend to buy. WIRED · TechRadar

6. Motorola Moto G Power 2026 — budget-oriented candidate
WIRED includes the Moto G Power 2026 as its budget phone. It may suit a buyer prioritizing a lower-cost Android option, but the available guide details do not establish its current price or a complete comparison against the Pixel 10a. Also, do not attribute the Moto G battery result below to this phone: Tom’s Guide reports a result for the Moto G 2026, not explicitly the Moto G Power 2026. WIRED
7. Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro — gaming-focused option
Tom’s Guide reports a 20-hour-34-minute battery-test result for the ROG Phone 9 Pro. That is an outlet test result, not a promise of daily runtime. 9. Nothing Phone (4a) Pro — alternative Android candidate
WIRED identifies the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro among options added in its September guide update. The available coverage here does not establish a specific comparative strength or enough detail to rank it against the Pixel 10a or other midrange phones. 10. Motorola Razr Ultra (2026) — foldable candidate
WIRED’s September update lists the Razr Ultra (2026) among its additional options. Its inclusion makes it worth investigating if you specifically want a foldable, but the cited material does not provide enough comparative testing to call it the best foldable or to assess its durability, battery or value against alternatives. WIRED
11. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 — large foldable candidate
The Galaxy Z Fold8 also appears among options in WIRED’s September update. Consider it only if a folding design and larger-screen use are central to your decision; the cited coverage does not establish a head-to-head verdict or enough detail to compare it with the Razr Ultra on durability, usability or price. Confirm the exact model and local availability before purchase. WIRED

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 phone guide reports these runtimes from its battery testing:
- Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro: 20 hours 34 minutes.
- Moto G 2026: 19 hours 10 minutes. This is the Moto G 2026 result; the source does not identify it as a Moto G Power 2026 result.
- iPhone 17 Pro Max: 17 hours 54 minutes.
These results are useful only as figures from Tom’s Guide’s test, not as predictions of how long any individual phone will last in a day. Usage, settings and network conditions affect personal runtime. Tom’s Guide’s guide
How should you choose between them?
- Start with platform: decide whether you prefer iOS or Android and the devices and services you already use. The recommendations above do not establish either platform as objectively better.
- Set a total budget: compare the price of the exact storage variant you want, not just a model name. Check whether a discount, trade-in or carrier offer changes the total cost.
- Match the size to your routine: decide whether one-hand use or a large display matters more, then check the exact model’s dimensions and display in a completed review.
- Choose camera priorities: think about still photos, video, low-light shots and telephoto zoom rather than relying on megapixel counts alone. Look for comparable sample images and tests.
- Check longevity and review status: seek a completed review and an official support commitment for the exact model. Do not treat a guide listing as proof of completed testing or assume support duration.
- Verify carrier and region fit: if buying in the United States, check that the phone is unlocked if that is what you need and confirm compatibility with your intended carrier. Do not assume U.S. bands, features or availability apply in other countries.
