She is due to join on 1 November and will be based in Johannesburg. The company says the appointment supports its investment in South Africa and a more connected presence across the Middle East and Africa (MEA).
What the appointment means
Schell will report to Attilio Tornetta, Managing Director and Head of Howden Re MEA Treaty & Regional Retro. She is also expected to work closely with Gary Ankcorn, Managing Director of Howden Re South Africa, and the wider local team. The announced start date is in the future as of 3 October 2026, so she has not yet begun the role.
Howden Re describes Schell as bringing “more than 34 years of experience in non-life insurance and reinsurance broking and underwriting leadership.” That is the company’s summary of her experience.
Her reported career background
Reinsurance News reports that Schell spent eight years at Swiss Re as Regional Manager P&C Southern Africa | Vice President | Europe, Middle East & Africa, and previously worked as a Senior Broker at Guy Carpenter. This employment history is reported by the trade publication; it is not included in Howden Re’s announcement.

Why Howden Re says it made the appointment
Howden Re presents the hire as part of continued investment in South Africa and the wider MEA region, with local expertise contributing to a more connected regional platform. The announcement describes the company’s strategy and rationale, but does not establish what commercial results the appointment will produce.
Ankcorn linked the hire to pressures facing South African insurers, municipalities and government. He said: “Hayley joins at an important time for the market. South Africa’s protection gap is widening, and insurers, municipalities and government are all feeling the pressure from catastrophe and climate risk. Howden Re has dedicated specialty, parametric and alternative solutions teams, and combining them with local and regional expertise like Hayley’s means we can give clients practical answers to the challenges they face.” These are Ankcorn’s assessments and the company’s description of its capabilities, rather than independently verified market findings in the appointment announcement.
