A new Uncharted could feel like a retread if it repeats the series’ familiar spectacle without giving players a fresh perspective on its characters, world, or challenges. But Naughty Dog has not officially announced a new Uncharted game, so there is no confirmed premise or design to judge yet. The key is not to abandon the franchise’s adventure identity; it is to make the next discovery change what that identity means.
Has Naughty Dog announced a new Uncharted?
No. Naughty Dog identifies Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as its next game, in development for PS5, and described it as a new franchise when announcing it in December 2024. Naughty Dog’s announcement does not announce an Uncharted project.
The current Uncharted claim comes from reporting. GamesRadar reported on October 1, 2026, that MP1st, citing sources, described an all-new Uncharted project rather than a remake, allegedly led by Shaun Escayg, with Nathan Drake involved in some capacity. GamesRadar also said leaker NateTheHate corroborated the Uncharted identification, but not a reported claim about the release order of The Last of Us Part III. These are unconfirmed details, not an official reveal. GamesRadar’s account provides the reporting and its attributions.
Naughty Dog’s September 28, 2026 studio update discussed two very early-stage projects expanding The Last of Us canon and said Intergalactic would receive a full reveal in 2027. It did not identify either early-stage project as Uncharted. The studio update therefore does not confirm the rumor.

What could make a new Uncharted feel like a retread?
PlayStation describes Uncharted as cinematic action-adventure built around historical mysteries, travel through varied environments, elaborate action set pieces, treasure hunts, and formidable rivals. Those elements are the series’ recognizable promise. They become a stale repetition if a new game merely assembles the same kinds of locations, chases, firefights, and revelations without changing what the player learns or does.
That distinction matters: recognizable ingredients are not themselves a problem. A fresh character perspective, a setting that offers more than a new backdrop, or gameplay that gives players different decisions can make familiar adventure mechanics feel purposeful again. Without that change, even polished spectacle may feel like an imitation of earlier entries. This is a way to assess a hypothetical game, not a description of its known design.

The one thing the studio should avoid: repeating the old experience without changing its point of view
The most useful test is whether a new Uncharted changes the player’s perspective on the adventure, rather than simply recreating the series’ most familiar beats. That does not require guessing which character, era, or location Naughty Dog should choose. The premise has not been announced. It means looking for meaningful change across three connected areas:
- Character perspective: Does the story extend a character’s arc in a way that adds something, or give another lead a distinct reason to take the journey? Uncharted 4 followed Nathan Drake after retirement, drawn back into exploration when his brother Sam resurfaced. The Lost Legacy put Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross at the center instead. The series has already shown that it can shift both a character’s circumstances and its lead.
- Setting and mystery: Does the historical mystery make its location matter to the story and discoveries, or is the location mostly scenery between set pieces? A globe-spanning adventure can retain the franchise’s scale while making each new place contribute something distinct.
- Gameplay decisions: Do traversal, combat, and action sequences ask players to engage differently, or do they only reproduce familiar spectacle? A new game need not discard its cinematic style to make its central challenges evolve.
These are questions for judging the eventual game, not claims about its reported premise. No public information establishes which character will lead, where the story will go, or how it will play.

Why a remake and a new adventure are different questions
The report describes the project as all-new rather than a remake, but that characterization is unconfirmed. The distinction matters because a remake asks whether revisiting an existing story improves or changes it; a new installment has the chance to add a different chapter to the series.
Former Uncharted designer Benson Russell, speaking about remaking Drake’s Fortune in a statement quoted by GamesRadar, said: “You’d have to rewrite the whole story to make it better which means you’re going to change the spirit and you’re going to change the scenes and what the first one was about, right?” That is Russell’s view of a remake, not Naughty Dog’s position or a comment on the rumored game. GamesRadar’s report gives the context.

There is precedent for the series changing its mechanics during development: Naughty Dog president Evan Wells recalled, “It’s hard to believe how late in the development we decided to switch to a third-person aiming mechanic for the gunplay.” He was reflecting on Drake’s Fortune’s 15th anniversary, not describing plans for a future game. Naughty Dog’s retrospective offers that historical context. It shows that a defining design choice can emerge during development, but says nothing about what a new Uncharted will do.

For an existing PS5 option, PlayStation lists Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which includes the single-player stories of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It is a way to revisit the series’ more recent adventures—not the rumored new game. PlayStation’s collection page describes both included stories.
