When you come up behind farm equipment, slow down, leave plenty of space and wait for a safe place to pass. Tractors and other harvest machinery are large and slow, so you may catch up faster than expected. During harvest, South Dakota roads may also carry cattle and people working alongside equipment; stay alert and be patient until the road is clear.
What to do when you come up behind farm equipment
- Look ahead and reduce speed. Farm machinery travels more slowly than ordinary traffic, and its size can make it difficult to judge how quickly you are closing in. Watch for equipment on rural roads, including at unusual hours, and adjust your speed to the road and conditions.
- Leave room and wait for a safe passing opportunity. Do not tailgate, squeeze past, or make a rushed pass. Give the operator time and space; South Dakota guidance notes that operators may move aside when they have an opportunity.
- Stay patient until the whole roadway is clear. Harvest traffic can include cattle drives and people as well as machinery. Do not assume the road is clear just because the equipment has moved past you.
South Dakota Department of Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch put the central advice plainly: “When you see farm equipment on the roadways, please be cautious.” His 2015 state column also urges motorists to take their time and allow operators a chance to move aside (South Dakota News, October 14, 2015).
Harvest safety for farm-equipment operators
- Check signing and lighting. Observe the applicable requirements for signs and lights on vehicles and equipment before using public roads. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety’s harvest advisory specifically calls for operators to observe “all signing and lighting requirements on vehicles and equipment” (October 7, 2010 release).
- Stay alert to road users. Account for motorists approaching from behind and for people or livestock sharing the roadway. Move aside only when there is a safe opportunity to do so.
- Take fatigue seriously. Long hours and harvest stress can affect judgment. The same state advisory warns that they can create fatigue that “leads to errors in judgment.”
South Dakota harvest vehicle permits: check the rules for your vehicle
Permit requirements are separate from safe-driving advice and depend on how a vehicle is used and licensed. The South Dakota Department of Revenue currently describes a $75 permit for each covered truck or tractor used to haul agricultural products or service harvesting equipment, and for each grain-hauling trailer, subject to listed exceptions. The page says permits are valid for custom harvest operations within the calendar year and must be displayed in the lower center of the windshield. Check the official Harvest Vehicles guidance for current fees, exceptions, eligibility and any licensing conditions before travel; do not assume one vehicle’s qualification applies to another.
What the available crash figures do—and do not—show
The 2024 South Dakota Strategic Highway Safety Plan says fatal and serious-injury crashes were most frequent from June through September, with 18 percent occurring in August. Those are statewide timing figures, not harvest-specific crash statistics and not evidence that harvest activity caused those crashes. The cited state material does not establish a current harvest-specific crash count, so unrelated figures should not be treated as one.

Move Over law is not a harvest-equipment rule
South Dakota’s Move Over summary concerns stopped authorized emergency vehicles displaying red visual signals and vehicles displaying amber or yellow flashing signals; the prescribed response depends on the road configuration. It is not a harvest-specific requirement. Consult the Department of Public Safety motor vehicle law summary for the applicable rule rather than applying it to farm equipment by assumption.
