How Aurochs Survived for Thousands of Years as the World Changed

Aurochs (*Bos primigenius*) survived repeated shifts in climate by retreating, fragmenting into regional populations and later expanding into newly suitable areas. They ranged across Europe, Asia and North Africa for hundreds of thousands of years, but they were not one unchanged population: ancient DNA reveals several regional ancestry histories shaped by climate and people. The species’ last known animal died in Poland in 1627, after a much later decline associated with hunting and habitat loss.

What were aurochs, and where did they live?

Aurochs were large wild bovines and the ancestors of domestic cattle. The Natural History Museum places their first fossil appearance at about 700,000 years ago and describes a range spanning Europe, Asia and North Africa. Natural History Museum: From aurochs to burgers

They were imposing animals, though size should not be treated as identical for every individual or population. The museum quotes Ice Age mammals expert Dr Tori Herridge describing aurochs as “the largest terrestrial mammal in Europe after the end of the last Ice Age,” and says males could stand nearly two metres tall and weigh about a tonne. Natural History Museum

How did climate change reshape their populations?

Across glacial cycles, aurochs shifted their range rather than simply persisting everywhere in place. The Natural History Museum describes populations moving south during colder glacial periods and expanding north during warmer interglacials. That pattern meant local losses and recolonizations could occur while the species survived elsewhere.

A 2024 study of 38 ancient genomes adds detail for Europe: during the Last Glacial Maximum, European aurochs underwent a severe population bottleneck, retreated to southern refugia and later recolonized from Iberia. These findings describe one regional history, not a universal pattern for every aurochs population. Nature, “The genomic natural history of the aurochs”

Why were aurochs not one uniform population?

The same 2024 genome study identified four broad ancestry groupings: European, Southwest Asian, North Asian and South Asian. Its findings indicate that aurochs populations had distinct regional histories, with climate and human influence both shaping their trajectories. Nature, “The genomic natural history of the aurochs”

This matters when describing survival: the species endured as populations changed, separated and moved, not as a single stable herd crossing unchanged landscapes. The study also describes domestication involving Southwest Asian aurochs, followed by male-mediated admixture as domestic cattle spread. Domestic cattle therefore preserve a complex legacy of aurochs ancestry rather than a simple one-time replacement. Nature, “The genomic natural history of the aurochs”

When did aurochs disappear from particular places?

Local extinction happened long before the species’ final known death. Denmark’s National Museum reports that aurochs disappeared from Zealand and Funen roughly 7,000–7,500 years ago, while they remained in Jutland until the beginning of the Iron Age. These dates concern separate Danish regions; they are not dates for the worldwide extinction. National Museum of Denmark: The Aurochs from Vig

Why did the aurochs finally go extinct?

The final decline is associated with human pressure, especially habitat loss and overhunting, rather than climate change alone. The Natural History Museum identifies both pressures, and an earlier population-genetics paper also discusses hunting and habitat reduction. Natural History Museum Population dynamic of the extinct European aurochs

The last known aurochs died in Jaktorów Forest, Poland, in 1627, according to the Natural History Museum. That historical endpoint came after a much longer story of climate-driven range shifts and region-by-region disappearance. Natural History Museum
