Yes. Italy’s 4 October observance of St Francis of Assisi is a national public holiday from 2026 onward under Law No. 151 of 8 October 2025, which took effect on 1 January 2026. The first holiday falls on Sunday, 4 October 2026. It coincides with the year marking 800 years since Francis’s death, but the holiday and the anniversary program were established by separate laws.
Is 4 October a public holiday in Italy?
Yes. Law No. 151, dated 8 October 2025, added 4 October to Italy’s statutory list of holidays and took effect on 1 January 2026. The new national feast honours St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy. Its first observance under the law is Sunday, 4 October 2026. Law No. 151
Because the 2026 date is a Sunday, it does not create a weekday long weekend. The national designation does not by itself establish local ceremony schedules, transport changes, venue hours or service closures; check with the relevant municipality or service provider for those details.
Why is Italy marking St Francis in 2026?
The year 2026 marks eight centuries since Francis’s death. The Vatican Apostolic Penitentiary identifies the date of his passing as 3 October 1226. Italy’s new holiday is the following day, 4 October: the death date and the annual national feast are adjacent, not the same date. Vatican Apostolic Penitentiary decree Law No. 151

What does the holiday law ask institutions to do?
Article 1 of Law No. 151 says the feast is intended to celebrate and promote peace, fraternity, environmental protection and solidarity, values it associates with Francis. The law allows public institutions to promote cultural, social and educational initiatives focused on those themes. Schools may develop related educational activities within their autonomy, and schools, public administrations and third-sector entities may facilitate events and celebrations on 4 October.

The holiday is a recurring statutory date. The centenary is a broader, multiyear cultural program established under the 2022 law. Its committee’s remit includes activities concerning Francis’s life, work and associated places, potentially including restoration, research, publications and educational work, exhibitions, cultural events, international promotion, tourism and Franciscan routes.
